FACT SHEET: WORKING WOMEN IN THE U.S.

President Obama has said that the issues facing women today are not just womens
issues. From income disparity to representation in diverse elds, the challenges that women and girls confront in the U.S. workforce affect everyone. This fact sheet takes a look at the strides American women have made, and the work that still needs to be done.

PARTICIPATION
Participation in the labor force among women age 20 and older rose from 32 percent in 1948 to 61 percent in 1997, and has held steady at 61 percent in 2009. For men age 20 and older, this rate fell from 89 percent in 1948 to 75 percent in 2009.
