Question Mark
| Rule: Use a question mark only after a direct question.
| Example: Will you say something?
Exclamation Point
| Rule: Use the exclamation point to show emphasis or excitement.
| Example: I am very hungry!
Quotation Marks
Colon
| Rule: Use the colon after a complete sentence to introduce a list of items.
| Example: On my trip I will bring: clothes, a pillow, a sleeping bag, a toothbrush, and my teddy bear.
| Rule: Use the colon after the greeting of the persons name in a business letter.
| Example: Dear Mr. Smith:
Parenthesis
| Rule: Use parenthesis to separate words or figures which explain the sentence in more detail.
| Example: The waiter received a fifty dollar ($50) tip. | Example: The woman orders a dozen (12) donuts.
Apostrophe
| Rule: Use the apostrophe when combining two words. It is always placed in the spot where the letter(s) have been removed.
| Example: Shes (she is) only allowed candy on Friday. | Example: She isnt (is not) allowed candy on Monday.
| Rule: Use the apostrophe to show possession. Place the apostrophe before the s.
| Example: They found Ms. Connors gloves.
Tom is hungry. He wants to eat breakfast before work. What should he do? Tom decides to go to the restaurant. He orders: five pancakes, a cup of orange juice, a cup of tea and a carton of milk. The waiter asks Tom if he wants something else. Tom says, I want a piece of cheese and a glass of water. Tom eats all his food and pays the bill. Wow! Tom says. He isnt hungry anymore. He is going to work now.
