B. Tech. V Semester (III year) Exam Branch- Mechanical Engineering II-Mid Term Test- Nov.-2011
Advanced Mechanics of Solid (5ME1) Time: - 2 hour 30 min. Attempt all questions 1. A cubical element is subjected to the following state of stress. W x ! 100 MPa, W y ! 20 MPa, W z ! 40 MPa, X xy ! X yz ! X zx ! 0 Assuming the material to be homogenous and isotropic, determine the principal shear strains and the octahedral shear strain, if E= 2 v 105 MPa and R =0.25. OR 2. (a) Derive stress- strain relations in terms of Lames coefficients for isotropic material. (b) Write the expression of Youngs modulus and Poissons ratio in terms of Lames constants. 3. A rubber cube is inserted in a cavity of the same form and size in a steel block and the top of the cube is pressed by a steel block with a pressure of p pascals. Considering the steel to be absolutely hard and assuming that there is no friction between rubber and steel, find the pressure of rubber against the box walls. OR 4. A thick walled cylinder of steel with radius a = 5 cm and b = 10 cm is subjected to an internal pressure p. The yield stress in tension for the material is 350 MPa . Using a factor of safety of 1.5, determine the maximum working pressure p according to the major theories of failure. E= 207 x 106 kPa, =0.25. 5. Derive Bulk modulus in terms of Lames constants. OR 6. Derive stress distribution in composite tube. 7. Compute Lames Coefficient and for (a) Steel having E = 207 x 106 kPa and = 0.3. (b) Concrete having E = 28 x 106 kPa and = 0.2. OR 8. A flat steel turbine disk of 75 cm outside diameter and 15 cm inside diameter rotates at 3000 rpm, at which speed the blades and shrouding cause a tensile rim loading of 44 kgf/ cm2. The maximum stress at this speed is to be 1164 kgf/ cm2. Find the maximum shrinkage allowance on the diameter when the disk and the shaft are rotating. 9. For steel, the following data is applicable: E = 207 x 106 kPa And G = 80 x 106 kPa For the given strain matrix at a point, determine the stress matrix. 0 0.002 0.001 0 0.003 0.003 0.002 0.003 0 OR 10. Derive the expression for maximum radial and maximum circumferential stress induced in a circular disk with a hole of radius a. Max Marks: - 20
