OPEN DELTA An insight -Part I

Prakash.V DGM(O),BESCOM

To curtail the usage of IP sets during the unscheduled periods (during single phasing) in a more effective way and to meet the lighting needs of rural consumers properly, open delta arrangement, with minor operational changes to the exiting roaster system can be implemented. In open delta system power supply is arranged to rural area feeders energizing two phases of the 11kV line at the sub-station itself. One phase is kept opened and is not shorted on the load side after GOS as is done in roaster system. In this case only one winding of the transformer gets energized to the rated extent and remaining two windings are not energized to the rated extent and cannot bear any load. IP set motors cannot run in this mode of supply. If motors run with more number of condensers, they will fail due to overload, since the entire load will appear on the single phase. This will refrain to use motors during this period. The voltages appearing on the LV side of the transformer between phase to neutral during this arrangement will be 230 volts, 160 Volts and 90 Volts, and motors cannot run. ADVANTAGES: The truly single phase supply system will result in Addressing the needs in rural areas strictly in accordance to the schedule. No unpredictable increase in load in the rural sub-stations. Decrease in consumption on rural feeders and loss of energy is avoided. Reduction in failure of distribution transformers.

Approximate reduction of 2-3 MW load in a each rural sub-station. Considering 12 Hours of single phase supply, reduction in consumption to an extent of approximately 200 units/Hr/feeder can be expected. (2400 Units/day). This varies from place to place.
