Grade 3 Weekly Update Week of January 9, 2012

Unit of Inquiry This week in art class the students will continue the process of reproducing a work by their chosen artist. This is not an easy assignment and requires a great deal of observation and patience. You can help by looking at the piece of art on the computer and talking with your child about what s/he notices about the style, subject, use of color, shape, line, etc. While much of our class time will be spent on the research report we will also continue to look at art, in general, and how artists are influenced by many factors. We have a field trip scheduled for Wednesday, January 18. The permission slip comes home today and should be returned with the fee. We can only take a limited number of chaperones. We will have a guided tour of one of two exhibits there. This week we begin the process of turning notes into text. Some students have to finish note taking. We will continue to reinforce using your own words and referencing information sources. We will also begin working on an ongoing poetry focus in class. Please share poems you enjoy in your home language. We have begun word study again this week. Please look for your childs words. This week we return to number with some work on division. We are using manipulatives to build an understanding of the concept of division. We will also be completing a mid-year math assessment to let us know what has been retained and what needs review. You will see the results in the January Portfolio (January 27th).

Looking Ahead

We welcome Ms. Andrea Bodrogi, as the substitute in 3B until David returns in February. Ms. Bodrogi is an experienced BBIS teacher who has most recently been out on maternity leave. Save the date: Thursday, February 2- Grade 3 Art Exhibit- details to follow. Your child will present as the artist or culture s/he has chosen. Some sort of costume is requested- it does not have to be much.
