• Antonio Masi was born in 1940

in Italy. He and his family

emigrated to America in 1947.
Immediately after arriving at
Ellis Island, he fell in love with
the structures of the city.
Antonio Masi and his family
then settled in the upper
east side of New York.
• Antonio took the test for the High
School of Industrial Art in 1955. He
passed, graduated in 1958, and
received a full scholarship to the
School of Visual Art. He graduated in
1961 and then began working as a
commercial artist and in 1966, returned
to his high school to teach art. Antonio
was named Art Chairperson in 1973
and received a Bachelor’s degree in
the History of Art in 1975 at CUNY. He
then began to work at one of the
leading graphic companies of the city
in 1979. Currently, Antonio has created
over 34 pieces, which have received
multiple honors.
• Antonio Masi was first inspired on his
day of arrival, December 7, 1947. He
was mesmerized by the city’s iconic
structures, “enormous possibilities”, and
“excitement and staggering immensity
of the place.” Antonio focused on
painting bridges, particulary the 59th
Street Bridge, because his father was
one of the laborers who helped build it
and also because of the fifty people
who lost their lives in the process.
• Antonio creates realistic, structural art, mainly New York
bridges. He uses watercolor to paint and create his pieces
because he feels it can capture bold subjects. He aims to
capture mood and uses glazes and “juicy” washes to do so.
He is an artist who tends to express his feelings at the
moment through his work.
• Antonio Masi creates his work in New York, where he
currently resides. He is represented by the Phyllis
Lucas Gallery in New York City.

• Antonio Masi’s art is very pleasing because he captures the
object he is painting, making it look very realistic, creating an
overpowering mood both in the observer and in the piece.
• Antonio has received over fourty-five awards for his fourty
paintings over the last six years. He has been recognized
by local art leagues, as well as societies from other states
and some all- American leagues.
