Water Pollution

BOD ( Biological Oxygen Demand) Concept Polluted Water Contain a lot of organic waste The using/demand of oxygen for microbial degradation increased This means that BOD for the polluted water is ver high

Methods : Collect 4 samples of water from four different resources Label 5 reagent bottles as P,Q,R,S and T Fill each reagen bottle with 200 ml of the collected water sample P : Drain water Q: river water R: lake water S : Pipe water S : Distilled water (control) Using a syringe , slowly add 2 ml of 0.1% methylene blue to the water sample Close the reagent bottle immediately Place all the bottles in a dark area Every half an hour check the change of colour for every bottle Record time taken for the methylene blue solution to turn colourless

Concept : Methylene blue solution will change into colurless when the volume of dissolved oxygen is very low In polluted water, the volume of dissolved oxgen is very low because most of them using for biodegradable of organic waste by microorganism Therefore, the time taken of 0.1% methylene blue solution is shorter We can say that the BOD of the water is high means that highly polluted ( by organic wastes)

Examples of the result : Reagen bottle Water sample Time taken for methylene blue solution to turn 1 2 5 Sustained Sustained

P Q R S T

Drain water River water Lake water Pipe water Distilled water

Conclusion : P is the most polluted water followed by Q, R, S & T respectively
