Assignment 3: Steady Uniform Flow in Open channels Non-uniform Open Channel Flow

1. Using Mannings equation, determine the discharge in concrete channel below given s = 1/ 500
and side slopes of 1:2 (vertical to horizontal). What is the depth if the new discharge is 25 m3/s? (14 marks)

3.0 m

Figure Q1 2. A trapezoidal section with base width 4.0 m and side slope of 1:1 conveys water at an average velocity of 3.5 m/s when the depth is 0.75 m. Under critical flow condition, determine: a. b. c. d. The discharge The critical depth The velocity The specific energy (10 marks)

3. Calculate the bottom width of a channel required to carry a discharge of 15 m3/s as a critical flow
at a depth of 1.2 m if the channel section is, a. b. Rectangular Trapezoidal with side slope 1.5 horizontal : 1 vertical. (6 marks)

4. A circular pipe has a diameter D of 2.0 m. When the depth of flow is 0.8D, the pipe conveys water
at 94.5% of the full discharge. Determine the discharge at this depth. Then, determine the discharge when it is full of water. Assume the bed slope is 1/100 and Chezy coefficient is 55. (10 marks)

5. A proposed rectangular canal is to be constructed to convey water at a rate of 150 m3/s through a
distance of 15 km at an average velocity of 2.485 m/s. Determine the gradient and the most suitable (optimum) section. Take C = 75. (10 marks)

6. A venture flume with a level bed 12 m wide and 1.5 m deep upstream with a throat width of 6 m.
Assuming that a standing wave forms downstream calculate the rate of flow of water if the discharge coefficient is 0.94. Correct for the velocity of approach. (8 marks) 7. A venture meter placed in open channel 2 m wide in which the throat width is 1.2 m. The upstream depth is 1 m and the floor is effectively horizontal. Calculate the flow when, a. The depth at the throat is 0.9 m and b. A standing wave is produced beyond the throat. (6 marks)
