Connecting with the World China

China & America


America is the main world power and is able to pressure China. Recently Beijing has stopped referring to the U.S a as an enemy. -Many Chinese feel that America is a threat to their nations security. China has to maintain a good relationship with the US in order for its motorization effort to be successful. Washington has started to seek Chinas cooperation in trade and finance despite friction in money and intellectual property.

The United States needs China's help on issues such as: 1) Counterterrorism 2) Reconstruction of Iraq 3) Achieving stability in the Middle East Chinas view: Washington's power is unlikely to decline, and its position in world affairs is unlikely to change.

Friendship with Africa DEALING WI H

SUCH AS A BALANCED ECONOMY, GOVERNMENT RIGHTS AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT. T DUE TO INCREASED TRADE, CHINA IS NOW AFRICA'S LARGEST TRADING PARTNER. T CHINESE GOVERNMENT OFFERED EMERGENCY FOOD AID TO HELP AFRICA COPE WITH FAMINE. T CHINESE INVESTMENT IN AFRICA IS GROWING RAPIDLY. THERE ARE A TOTAL OF MORE THAN 2,000 CHINESE COMPANIES OF VARIOUS TYPES

AFRICA

North Korea Ally or Foe?


China is North Korea's most important ally; biggest trading partner; and main source of food, arms, and fuel. North Korea's second nuclear test in May 2009 further complicated its relationship with China. -China may feel even more restrained from pressuring North Korea for fear of alienating a future power base. -At the same time, China has too much at stake in North Korea to withdraw its support entirely.

China's trade with North Korea has continued to increase. -North Korea is economically dependent on China, which provides 90% of its food and energy supplies. -North Korea's economic dependence on China is rapidly increasing. There are hundreds of thousands of North Korean refugees flooding into China which is a huge worry for Beijing.

Russia on the Border


Instability in Russia, which shares a border with China, creates major problems for it. -A change of government could cost China an important friend. The two countries arent allies Two countries rely on each other -They take the same side in UN debates. Russia may add to Chinas fear of being encircled by American allies. -Chinas leaders are scared of democratic revolutions that began in Tunisia. Without Russia, China would be left alone as a state of authority.

Treaties with England


The two sides signed the Joint Communiqu Agreement which resulted in the Exchange of Ambassadors. Issued the China-UK Joint Statement which announced the establishment of the partnership between the two countries. The Chinese President visited the Queen which laid a significant foundation for the development of their SinoBritish relations in the new century. British investments in China has been the largest among the European countries. -UK invested into many projects with China. UK has provided China 4 government loans since 1986.

The two countries have experienced active cultural exchanges and frequent visits. The two governments invested 600,000 pounds to establish the China-UK Scientific and Technological Research Fund. UK is one of the earliest among European countries to join China in creating academic bonds. -Many teachers from Britain have come to teach Chinese students in China and many Chinese have studied at Britain's Universities. -Two sides signed the China-UK Framework Agreement on Educational Cooperation. China and UK exchanged military agreements.

Down in Australia
SinoAustralian economic ties have grown. Trade has increased dramatically. -China is now Australias largest trade partner. -Australia runs a sizable trade surplus with China. Iron ore and coal are the main products exported from Australia to China. Economic ties with China bring risks to Australia. -Australia depends on Chinas business and if it stops it would be devastating for Australia. Australia supplies China with a lot of natural gas Relationship benefits tens of millions of individuals in both countries.

Japans Fight for Power


Japan and China have economic ties and a trade system. Their relationship is increasingly strained, with dangerous results for the United States and the world at large. China was always more prosperous and powerful than Japan. -China's economy and influence have grown rapidly, Japan's have remained stationary. China and Japan have always been in a power battle. -This battle for leadership between China and Japan today is creating new security dilemmas.

Now there is a struggle between a mature power and a rising one. Tensions between the two countries date to the humiliation of China in the 1894-1895 SinoJapanese War, and more recently Japans abusive occupation of China. China, both economically and militarily, is outpacing Japan. Territorial and economic issues also aggravate the relationship.
