CENTRAL PARK SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN

2nd Quarter Music 3rd- 5th grade

Weve had a busy second quarter in music. Heres a review of the students accomplishments from the first half of the school year. All classes know music class procedures well and know what behaviors are expected of them. THIRD GRADE: 3rd graders reviewed how to identify the whole note, whole rest and dotted half note. They had the opportunity to improvise rhythmically within four beats through Orff tunes. The xylophones, metallophnes, and glockenspiels gave them the opportunity to demonstrate correct mallet technique. The 3rd graders are able to identify and perform repeated musical phrases or rhythms by speaking, singing, moving or playing. Double Trouble, Shake dem Bones, Hill and Gully Rider, and Gagliarda were a part of this repertoire. A favorite listening activity for this grade was Hunts Twelfth Street Rag. They performed the rhythmic body percussion that complimented the four parts to this piece. Twelfth Street Rag also gave the children a really good idea what an interlude sounds like. FOURTH GRADE: Fourth grade knows how to identify Ti-Ta-Ti syncopation and eighth rest. We continue from last years review of lines/spaces on the treble clef. The Xylophones, metallophnes, and glockenspiels give us the opportunity to demonstrate correct mallet technique. The 4th graders are able to identify and perform repeated musical phrases or rhythms by speaking, singing, moving or playing. They also worked in small groups with their Native American flute songs. A particular favorite was a folk tune No One in the House where the children performed this melody with orchestration that included Soprano, Alto, and bass xylophone harmonies. Fantastic Sounds! FIFTH GRADE: Fifth grade reviewed rhythmic figures: dotted quarter/eighth, eighth/two sixteenth and two sixteenths/ eighth. They continue to review lines/spaces on the treble clef. They are able to identify and perform repeated musical phrases or rhythms by speaking, singing, moving or playing. A favorite with them is the instrument games that require them to distinguish between the four orchestral families. Musically yours, Liz Wells
