Abstract
ABSTRACT:
Hepatitis A, one of the oldest diseases known to humankind, is a self-limited disease which results in fulminant hepatitis. However, it is a significant cause of morbidity and socioeconomic losses in many parts of the world. HAV is transmitted from person to person, primarily by the fecal-oral route. . Every year, approximately 10 million people worldwide are infected with the virus whereas In India, Hepatitis A affects nearly a lakh patient every year. There is a striking correlation between increasing age and death from fulminant HAV infection with the mortality rates in excess of 2 per cent in the over 40 age group. Approximately, 2.5 crore children are born every year in India, according to estimates of the research team at Glaxo.
The Hepatitis A virus, associated with poor standards of living, is spread by a lack of proper hygiene and sanitation. The virus spreads through faeces, contaminated food and water. Hepatitis A does not have a chronic stage and does not cause permanent liver damage. Following infection, the immune system makes antibodies against the hepatitis A virus that confer immunity against future infection. The disease can be prevented by vaccination and hepatitis A vaccine has been proved effective in controlling outbreaks.
Current study includes general introduction of HAV virus, its epidemiology, infection rate, transmission and pathogenesis of HAV infection, Symptoms, prevention by vaccination.
