ABSTRACT

The intend of the present paper is to examine to what extend the new, and in particular
digital, technologies have contributed to the evolution of a specific type of cultural
organizations, the Art Museums. Art Museums, alike to almost all kinds of cultural units,
have been benefited from the great improvement that digital technologies have shown
especially during the last decade in a variety of ways by offering them the chance to
dynamically reveal not only the character but also the purpose of their function, while on the
same time are being able to address to a much larger audience that exceeds both the limits and
the limitations imposed to them by the societies in which art museums are functioning.
Studying the cases of major art museums in both Greece and Europe, is getting
immediately evident that digital technologies have already begun to evolve as a very
important mean of exposing not only the collections that the museums hold, but also all the
elements related to the art museum's interpretational and educational activities (that form their
character, along with their educational and entertaining scope). And while the primary use of
digital technologies begun as a method of managing collections and keeping records of the
objects, their use has now been expanded and includes multimedia stations, presentational and
descriptive applications during exhibitions, and with the arrival of the World Wide Web we
have museums internet sites which offer information that cover different fields, from the
collections that the museum has in its possession to material that explains their action as a
whole, and also give access to data bases, educational material and even virtual exhibitions.
And while the primary use of digital technologies in museums environment has been accepted
with scepticism, and even sometimes suspiousness, nowadays these applications form a
substantial part of museums program, opening pioneering ways in innovation and inspiration.
Besides, the fundamental contribution of new technologies in museums is that they constitute
the primary vehicle of transforming the notion of museum from a stagnant medium of
authenticity, into a means of dynamic, direct, personalized, and daily experiences.

Defining has been the moment that museums shifted their centre of attention from objects
and their projection to their audience and its needs. New technologies offer limitless
possibilities to this end. Especially for art museums which have always been building an
elitist approach with their audience -excluding the non-connoisseurs from their grounds- new
technologies assist so these places acquire a wider social orientation and a broad educational
and amusing content.
