The collective

Skinal Nichimetik in Spanish means land of owers. It is the name of a group of women embroiderers, weavers and seamstresses located in Pueblo Nuevo Sital, Simojovel municipality in the Highlands of Chiapas. The group was formed in 2005 starting with only twelve women. It now has 18 women from different religion and familie background.

The community is at 1420 above sea level and is accessible with a three-hour dirt road driveway from Simojovel. The town has 5000 inhabitants and eleven religions, of which the presbitariana and Pentecost have the most members. The indigenous language is Tzeltal. Machismo is a big problem in Pueblo 7

the village and saw the need to create an organized group of women to collaborate on household income. Maria del Carmen Cruz Martinez is the leader and mainstay of the group. The group visited the education center of Kinal Antsetik A.C. in San Cristobal, when this group was in search of nding new ways to organize themselves as a collective. Thus began companionship in his training as embroidery artisan women, trying to help them that their dreams come true. Kinal provided them through its members to organize workshops about marketing and sewing. Strengthen integral development processes in various areas of indigenous womens groups is what they are mainly doing.

Nuevo Sital so women are battered by their husbands because they dont bring money home. The collective dream is to integrate more women in the community to understand their rights, get another perspective of life and be a little more independent. Other projects for the future are to build their own workplace and to increase their market. The group aims to output to other places to sell at national or international level and hopes to increase the quality of its brands and improve the quality of life of their families.
