e G/T Summer Institutes provide interested students with advanced-level instruction and enrichment experiences not regularly available during the academic school year. e curriculum is focused on talent development and provides academically and artistically rigorous activities. Teaching strategies represent best practices in the elds of gifted and talented and arts education.

Transportation for students enrolled in the G/T Summer Institutes will be the responsibility of the students and their parents/ guardians. Students must be dropped o and picked up on time.

GG01.E1 Session I Entering Grades: 1-2 Tuition: $270.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Cheryl Follmer Get your magnifying glasses ready to explore the photographic and rhythmic literary experiences created by Jean Marzollo and Walter Wick in their I Spy book collection. e students in this class will discover the creative process that is involved in designing these books and the accompanying riddles. ey will be inspired to construct a variety of theme-based projects that will become the artifacts for the class I Spy displays and original keepsake books. e activities are designed to include topics in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and arts integration. GG02.E1 Session I Entering Grades: 2-3 Tuition: $270.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Sarah Biondo is class explores the use of tangrams, ancient Chinese puzzle pieces consisting of 7 geometric shapes, to create dierent characters for stories that students read and write. Instruction is math-based and focuses on creativity and hands-on activities to enhance math skills. Students learn and interpret geometric and spatial relationships while integrating language arts skills. Team building skills are stressed when students work with peers to produce and perform engaging plays as end projects.

Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Christopher Brown In this interactive class, students will explore the many environmental problems that face the human race as Earths population continues to grow. Students will study a variety of sustainable practices that go into the planning of such a community, including energy production and consumption, transportation options, water treatment and conservation, protection of our natural resources and creative alternatives for waste management. Students will demonstrate their new knowledge by working cooperatively to plan a green community of their own. Instructor: Phil Wright is class introduces the essential building blocks behind object-oriented programming through creating fun, interactive stories and games. Students will use Scratch (a project from the MIT Media Lab) and Alice (a project from Carnegie Mellon) software to learn programming through interactive storytelling. In addition, students will develop critical thinking and problem solving skills by learning the basic programming code of the Python language.

Instruction will focus on using the scientic method to experiment, observe, and test hypotheses. Students will engage in learning about matter and its properties while using chemistry to create and explain color changes, huge bubbles, weird smells and eusions of gas. Curriculum is designed to teach the principles of chemistry, to allow students to become familiar with laboratory techniques, and to encourage scientic inquiry.

Instruction will focus on learning the basic components of mystery writing. Students will study the works of Blue Balliett, beginning with her award-winning novel, Chasing Vermeer. After analyzing Ballietts style, the students will apply their knowledge of mystery writing to write an original, realistic ction book, using digital photography to record clues.
GG08.E1 Session I Entering Grades: 4-5 Tuition: $270.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Jessica Michaelson In this class, young astronauts will explore the theme of space through science, math, technology, writing, reading, career education and current events. ey will learn about Americas history in space in order to promote a deeper understanding of the Space Race and NASAs future plans involving Mars. Instruction will emphasize problem-solving activities and creativity, as students build rockets and make model space devices.

Curriculum is designed to engage students in imaginative thinking as they craft original poetry and short stories. GG18.E2 Session II Entering Grades: 4-5 Tuition: $300.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Jessica Brown Students in this interactive class will work in cooperative groups called medical clinics to explore the components and workings of six dierent systems in the human body: circulatory, respiratory, nervous, digestive, muscular/skeletal, and immune system. Each student will become an expert in his or her specialty and must pass a Board Exam prior to practicing medicine. Within the clinics, students will study the relationship between positive health behaviors and the prevention of injury, illness, and disease. e unit will conclude with Grand Rounds, where each clinic team is presented with a patient, and must research and work together to nd a diagnosis.

After learning the mathematical and scientic concepts that relate to each project, students will simulate the role of civil engineers, as they are challenged to create successful products.

IN HISTORY GG25.M2 Session II Entering Grades: 6-8 Tuition: $300.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Katie Quinn Students in this class will act as historical investigators, determining the cause and eect of many of the worlds mysteries: the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, Stonehenge, the Bermuda Triangle, and the lost colonists of Roanoke. As students conduct their historical investigations, they will learn and further develop research skills, such as determining source reliability, dierentiation of primary and secondary sources, and critical thinking. Successful students have a vast toolbox of research skills. What better way to add to that toolbox than through the study of our civilizations greatest mysteries!
Session II Tuition: $300.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Mary Reinhard Students in this class will use their imaginations and apply mathematical concepts to create their own architectural drawings and models. Using geometry and measurement skills, students will determine costs, solve problems in response to design challenges, and advertise their projects. e instructor will teach these concepts through the exploration of several architectural styles, design concepts, and problem-solving strategies. Students will complete hands-on activities as they build original models.

Students will practice observational skills while working directly from real objects, people, and landscapes. Participants will learn how to use the power of observation to accurately depict what they see. Working from life, students will draw a variety of subject matter including still-life, portraits, gures, and landscapes. Using materials such as graphite, charcoal, and pastel, students will learn how to use light and shadow to accurately depict subjects.

Studio problems are designed to help master photographic techniques and tap into students personal experience of the visual world around them. Students will learn how to conceive, develop, and rene images while exploring options in manipulating imagery for expressive purposes.

Everywhere we look there are cardboard tubes and boxes, plastic bottles, caps, forks and spoons, broken coee mugs and other objects of waste waiting for a new purpose. In this class, old becomes new again when students take a look at how everyday recyclable objects become tools in making personal works of art! Students will learn new 2- and 3-D art making techniques while using their imagination and creativity to create collages, sculptures, and works that explore design-based problems through the use of found objects.

GA02.E1 Session I Entering Grades: 4-5 Tuition: $270.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Dominique Bucci Do you love to travel to new places you have never seen before? is class is designed to help students visually travel around the world to experience the individual colors, textures, and styles of artwork from dierent continents. By exploring the historical and cultural background of artworks throughout the world, students will experiment with a wide variety of 2- and 3-D materials while creating personal drawings, paintings, collages, and 3-dimensional culturally responsive works of art.

GA22.M2 Session I Entering Grades: 6-8 Tuition: $270.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS roughout its long history, cartooning and caricature have provided a wonderful means for people to capture (humorous) likenesses, entertain one another, bring forth laughter, and take amazing ights of fantasy. is class is designed to look at cartooning as a powerful medium for all kinds of storytelling and idea exploration while focusing on the student as artist and author. Students will create their own characters and illustrate their own stories by using a variety of art materials and studio techniques.

GA05.E2 Session II Entering Grades: 4-5 Tuition: $300.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Dominique Bucci is class will focus on the many materials, techniques, and subjects that master artists (both past and present) work with to inspire and create one of a kind works of art. Students will delve into masterful ways to create portraits, landscapes, and abstractions while utilizing drawing, painting, collage, and mixed media techniques. Master artists will inspire students to experiment and develop personal and original masterpieces through thoughtful planning, preparation and experimentation.

GA06.E2 Session II Entering Grades: 4-5 Tuition: $300.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: April Simpson is class is designed for students who like to construct and sculpt using 3-D materials. Instruction will focus on how Master Artists utilize artful building techniques and the dierent ways students can creatively develop original sculptural masterpieces. Students enrolled in this class will have fun working with various materials including plaster gauze, clay, paper, paper-mache, wire, and natural/ found objects to create new works of art ranging from mobiles to masks. Sculptural methods introduced will allow students to explore, develop, and build their artistic compositional and technical skills all in one! GA24.M2 Session II Entering Grades: 6-8 Tuition: $300.00 Location: Oakland Mills MS Instructor: Jacob Cecil In this class, students use digital imaging to create and manipulate original works of art. Using personal photographs, drawings, collages, artworks, and Adobe Photoshop, students will explore the potential of the digital medium to create personally meaningful compositions and images. By utilizing a variety of compositional decisions and visual eects via use of lters, the graphics drawing toolbox, color eects, and artful use of text individuals will experiment with creating completely new images. Students works are printed and copied to CD for their portfolios.

GA32.H2 Session II Entering Grades: 9-12 Tuition: $300.00 Location: Wilde Lake HS Instructor: Heather Leatherman is class is designed to help students further develop observational drawing and painting skills in a traditional method, exploring dierent genres, including still-life, gure, portraiture, and landscape. Students will work in a large format, using a variety of wet and dry media. Work produced in this course can be used for the Breadth section of the Advanced Placement Drawing or 2-D Portfolio.
