Part 1 Objective Observation

Date: Monday April 4th Child one was throwing a ball over the gate leading outside of the room. She grabbed a ball from the ball bin, walked over to the gate and stood there looking around. After a few seconds she raised her arms and began to swing her arm downwards. After a few swings the ball goes flying over the fence and out the door. She then stops swinging her arms, laughs out loud and heads back to the bin. She grabbed another ball and heads towards the fence again. Part 2 Decision

The strategies I chose to use in this situation were redirection, modeling and positive wording. I used redirection because it works best for younger children (direct guidance power point). Modeling because Adults are positive models (direct guidance power point). Positive wording because positive wording tells the child what to do instead of what not to do (positive communication power point). Part 3 Actions

When I first approached the situation I got her attention and spoke calmly and kindly asked her to stop throwing the balls over the gate because she was putting the balls in the way of the eces from passing by. She looked at me and stopped. I got down to her level and then instructed her to throw the balls back into the bin after she pulled it out by showing her how to do it. I placed the bin in an open area and began to throw it there and she followed shortly.

Next time I would explain the safety hazards of where she was throwing the balls Provide an activity that gives the children a target to aim for Consider the environment/room setting of the gate and block it off
