ELECTRICSERVICERULESGROUNDING 500. GENERAL A. InaccordancewiththeNationalElectricalCode(NEC),apermanentandeffectivegroundshall alwaysbeprovidedforallserviceentranceequipment.Theneutralconductorshallalsobe grounded.SeeSection501forexamples. B. Thegroundingofelectricinstallationsisessentialforthesafetyofthoseusingthe electricservice,personnelmaintainingtheservice,andisasafeguardfortheCustomers equipment. C. IntersystemBondingisrequiredbyNEC250.94.Seesection502Dfordetails. 501. GROUNDINGELECTRODESYSTEM GroundingElectrodesNEC250.52: 1. MetalUndergroundWaterPipe.NEC250.52(A)(1) 2. MetalFrameofaBuildingorStructureNEC250.52(A)(2) 3. ConcreteEncasedElectrode(Ufer)NEC250.52(A)(3) 4. GroundRingNEC250.52(A)(4) 5. RodandPipeElectrodesNEC250.52(A)(5) 6. PlateElectrodes.NEC250.52(A)(6) Ifavailableonthepremisesateachbuildingorstructureserved,eachiteminNEC250.52 (A)16,shallbebondedtogethertoformthegroundingelectrodesystem. Thegroundingelectrodeconductor(GEC) 1) Thegroundingelectrodeconductorshallnotberunthroughmetersockets, InstrumentTransformerCabinets,ortheutilityportionofameteringpedestal. 2) Thegroundingelectrodeconductormaybeterminatedinoneofthefollowing. a) Intheservicedisconnect(s). b) Inthemeteringequipmentcontainingaservicedisconnect c) Intheterminationcompartmentofmultiplemeteringinstallations. Metalundergroundgaspipingsystemsonthelinesideofthegasmetershallnotbeused asagroundingelectrodeorbondedtothegroundingelectrodesystem. Iftwogroundrodsareinstalled(NEC250.56),bothgroundrodsshallbeinstalledtoleft orrightofmetersocketbutnotinfront.Thegroundingelectrodeconductorshallnot passinfrontofmetersocketorpedestal.

502. BONDINGSERVICEENTRANCEANDMETERINGEQUIPMENT A. Theelectricalcontractorisresponsibleforallbondingconnections. B. Theterminationcabinet,theCTcabinetandthemetersocketenclosureshallbebonded to: 1. Thesystemneutralwhentheyarelocatedonthelinesideoforatthemain disconnect. 2. Theequipmentgroundingconductor,whenallofthefollowingapply: a. Theyareinstalledtheloadsideofthemaindisconnect. b. Noservicegroundfaultprotectionisinstalled. c. Theyarelocatedimmediatelyadjacenttothemaindisconnect. C. Bondingshallbeprovidedwherenecessarytoensureelectricalcontinuityandthe capacitytosafelyconductanyfaultcurrentlikelytobeimposed. D.IntersystembondingCATV,CableDishsystemsandTelephoneCompaniesshallbondto thegroundingelectrodesystem,ifavailable.Ifthegroundingelectrodesystemisnotreadily available,bondingshallbedoneatthegroundterminalbarinthemainserviceentrance equipment.NEC250.94(2)or(3)only.Thisintersystembondingshallnotbedoneinoron themeteringequipment.WisconsinisthejurisdictionofthePSC.(PSC114.099) E.Meterdisconnectswitchesnominallyratednotinexcessof600voltsshallhaveashort circuitratingequaltoorgreaterthantheavailableshortcircuitcurrent.Thesedevicesshall alsobegroundedandbondedaccordingtopartsV&VIIofArticle250. 503.BONDINGCONDUCTORSIZING A. Equipmentbondingconductorsonthesupplysideofserviceshallbesizedaccordingto NEC250.102C.Table503maybeusedasaguideindeterminingtheminimumsizefor equip.bondingconductorsformeteringcabinetinstallations. B. Table503assumes75Ctemperatureratingsforserviceentranceconductors,withno adjustmentfactorformorethan3currentcarryingconductors.Ona3phase4wirewye servicewherethemajorportionoftheloadconsistsofnonlinear(harmonic)loads,the neutralshallbeconsideredasacurrentcarryingconductor(NEC310.15B4c);insuch casesalargerequipmentbondingconductorshallbeused.
