Study Guide: Congruent Triangles

2012

Be uent with the following vocabulary Triangle classication By angle measure: acute, obtuse, right, equiangular By side length: scalene, isosceles, equilateral Side, vertex/vertices, exterior angle, remote interior angles Isosceles triangle terms: vertex angle, base angle, leg, base Congruence transformations: slide (translation), turn (rotation), ip (reection) Theorems/Postulates Angle Sum Theorem: The sum of the measures of the angles of a triangle is 180 . Third Angle Theorem: If two angles of one triangle are congruent to two angles of a second triangle, then the third angles of the triangles are congruent. Exterior Angle Theorem: The measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the measures of the two remote interior angles. Denition of Congruent Triangles: Abbreviated: CPCTC. Two triangles are congruent if and only if their corresponding parts are congruent. Theorems to Prove Triangle Congruence SSS SAS ASA AAS

SSA is not a valid criteria for triangle congruence Isosceles Triangle Theorem If two sides of a triangle are congruent, then the angles opposite those sides are congruent. Note: the converse of this theorem is also true: If two angles of a triangle are congruent, then the sides opposite those angles are congruent. Generality and the scope of a proof

The test will cover the following skills Apply triangle vocabulary, relationships, and theorems to problem solving with triangles. You should be able to nd missing angles and side lengths in various situations. This may require you to use theorems relating to parallel lines, apply the Pythagorean Theorem or Distance Formula, etc. Practice 4-1: 26-29, 34. 4-2: 18-27. 4-3: 5, 25-30, 40-42. 4-6: 23-28, 35-37. 4-7: 10-18. Write a ow or two-column proof involving triangle congruence. Know how to prove that two triangles are congruent, and know when to prove triangle congruence as an intermediate step: for example, use triangle congruence to prove that two sides are congruent. You may need to apply the Segment or Angle Addition Postulates or theorems involving Parallel Lines and Angles in these proofs. Practice 4-1: 38-41. 4-2: 39-44. 4-4: 14-19, 28. 4-5: 9-20. 4-7: 25-281 , 41-44.
