Generic Name: CEFUROXIME Brand Name: ZOLTAX Classification: ANTIBIOTIC Frequency: BID Dosage: 1 tab 500 mg Contraindicated: Route: PO * Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug. * Use cautiously in patients hypersensitive to penicillin because of possibility of crosssensitivity with other betalactam antibiotics. * Use with caution in breastfeeding women and in patients with history of colitis or renal sufficiency.

Mechanism of Action
Second-generation cephalosporin that inhibits cellwall synthesis, promoting osmotic instability; usually bactericidal.

Indication/Contraindication
Indication: Pharyngitis, tonsillitis, infections of the urinary and lower respiratory tracts, and skin and skin-structure infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and S. pyogenes, Haemophillus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli.

Side Effects
Body as a Whole: Thrombophlebitis (IV site); pain,burning, cellulitis( IM site);superinfections,positive Coombs'test. GI: Diarrhea, nausea, antibiotic-associated colitis. Skin: Rash, pruritus, urticaria. Urogenital: Increased serum cretonne and BUN, decreased creatinine clearance

Nursing Responsibility
 Determine history of hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosphorins, penicillins and history of allergies particularly to drugs before therapy is initiated.  Report onselt of loose stools  Absorption of cefuroxime is enhanced by food.  Notify prescriber about rashes or superinfections

Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl works by stimulating enteric nerves to cause colonic mass movements. It is also a contact laxative; it increases fluid and NaCl secretion. Action of bisacodyl on small intestine is negligible; stimulant laxatives mainly promote evacuation of the colon.

Indication/Contraindication Indication:  Constipation  Evacuation of bowel before radiologic studies or surgery Containdicated:  Acute surgical abdomen or intestinal obstruction  severe dehydration  fecal impaction  chronic use.

Side Effects
 Abdominal cramps (colic, cramps)  Nausea  Diarrhea  Hypokalemia  Muscle weakness

Nursing Responsibility
Assess bowel sounds Do not give if patient ahs abdominal pain Teach the patient:  short-term therapy only  increase fluid intake  bulk up the diet  normal bowel habits may vary from 3 times/day to 3 times/week
