Currently, the passenger car segment contributes bulk of the revenue to Mahindra & Mahindra's vehicle business. It has two joint ventures- Mahindra Renault and Mahindra International. "Plans include launching a number of commercial vehicles in the light, medium and heavy segments, including a sub one-tonner by December 2009. These are likely to jack up earnings from the commercial vehicle segment and we are looking at a total revenue figure of Rs 10,000 crore by 2011. During 2007-08 the figure was Rs 8,000 crore," said Mr Pawan Goenka, president (automotive sector) Mahindra & Mahindra. He was talking to reporters at a press conference to launch Xylo in Kolkata on Friday. "Plans include pumping in Rs 1,350 crore to launch several commercial vehicles. While a sub-1 tonne van will be launched in October, medium and heavy trucks will be launched in 11, 16, 25 33, 42 and 49 tonne categories," he said. "Revenues from goods carriers may overtake passenger carriers as trucks have a large unit price than passenger vehicles. Of course, the launch of a new sports utility vehicle (SUV) in 2011 should infuse fresh excitement in the passenger category but I believe trucks will be ahead in the end," he said. We are planning to set up 50-60 new dealerships across the country for the commercial vehicle business. M&M, currently has capacity to manufacture 20,000 light trucks every year from its unit at Zahirabad near Hyderabad. It is in the process of setting up a Rs 2,500 crore plant in Chakan near Pune to roll out the new vehicles. This plant will have a capacity to manufacture 300,000 units per annum of trucks of a total of 50,000 units. M&M is looking at capturing a 10% marketshare in the truck segment soon.
