ENERGY AND EXERGY 5744(2)94/09/14 37 ENERGY AND EXERGY Total energy consists of available energy plus unavailable energy. Considering flows of energy in a system, total energy is simply called energy and available energy is called exergy. These are defined mathematically as Energy Exergy enthalpy x flow rate = hG (kJ/s) availability x flow rate = aG (kJ/s) The energy and exergy flows in a system can be calculated. Conservation of energy indicates that energy flows into and out of components should be equal. This is true and slight differences are due to heat losses. Exergy flows to and from components however do not balance indicating a disappearance or “consumption” of exergy. This disappearance is really a conversion from available energy to unavailable energy. Consumption is a descriptive term indicating the loss of available energy. Components consume exergy by virtue of the ineffectiveness of their ability to transfer available energy. Exergy consumption is as follows: Steam Generator 108 =MW Feedwater Heater 81 MW Condenser 25 MW Steam Turbine 145 MW ENERGY AND exeneY in Réacror sysrem 4 M Sb STEAM GENERATOR G = Nooo kals M = 1000 kgls W = $0000 kale CONDENSER 0.056
