LLANGEWYDD JUNIOR SCHOOL HOMEWORK POLICY DOCUMENT Introduction Two aims of our school are to develop a sense of partnership

within the school and to develop inquiring minds and to become independent in the learning process. Homework has a large part to play in the achievement of these aims. In this context homework should be given on a regular basis to pupils in each year group. Children will be provided with relevant information to enable them to complete tasks and with support to aid them to complete the task. Reasons for giving homework To consolidate and complete work begun during a lesson To develop skills or concepts discussed during school time To encourage self discipline and self motivation To develop good working habits To develop independent learning To develop organisational skills Setting homework The type of homework given varies according to the pupils age and ability and will be planned according to the needs of the class and child. The planned homework will take any of the following forms: Learning tasks Reading Spelling practice Investigational work Projects Research work Practice in maths and science problems Home/school tasks Model making Designing Reading journal tasks Planning for written work Teachers ensure that all children fully understand the homework given and also ensure children are clear about when homework is to be handed in. Records are kept of children handing inn homework tasks. Marking the homework Teachers attempt to ensure that all children complete homework. Homework is marked and returned to children after three days. Errors are dealt with during the course of the lesson dealing with the subject. Records are kept of the children who hand in homework. Children who do not complete homework are reminded of its importance and reminders are given to parents during visits. Parental Support We ask parents to support their childs learning by providing adequate space, time and freedom from interruption to complete tasks. We meet parents at the start of the year to explain our homework policy and to discuss what parents can do for their children. The head teacher meets parents fortnightly to provide explanations of how our young people can be supported at home. Our new web site now provides easy access for parents to contact school and receive advice on homework tasks.
