If you are a healthcare worker or live with or care for a high-risk person, it is important that you get a vaccination to avoid spreading the flu. DETERMINATION IN THE FACE OF A DEBILITATING DISEASE

Don Strahorn has had a trying four years. At age 50, he began experiencing the most challenging situation of his life, an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a disease that attacks motor neurons throughout the brain and spinal cord and causes muscle degeneration. Yet despite the physical toll its taken on his body, Dons resolve and courage have not wavered. In the four years he has been receiving care at the MDA/ ALS Neuromuscular Center at the INTEGRIS Southwest Neuroscience Institute, he has come to embody the philosophy of the specialists there, living every day to its absolute fullest potential, and encouraging others impacted by the disease to do the same.

A PERSONAL DEDICATION TO PUBLIC AWARENESS

Just as powerful as his determination is Dons desire to increase awareness of this disease and help others learn the symptoms and understand the importance of early diagnosis. Currently, 15 people every day are diagnosed with ALS and many times the symptoms, which include muscle weakness, twitching and cramping, difficulty swallowing or projecting the voice and other related muscular issues, are so slight they are overlooked. As one of only 38 MDA/ALS centers in the U.S., and the only one of its kind in Oklahoma, we are proud to be an integral part of helping people like Don stand strong in their fight and to lead the way in providing the best treatments, and ultimately, the hope for a cure.
