Assessing the Correlation between Drive and Personality

Method

Participants

Participants included 109 (83 female) students enrolled in the PSYC 204 class at Texas

A&M University.

Measures

Drive was measured using the Personality Research Form developed by Jackson (1984).

The format in use was 16 questions that participants rated on a scale from 1-5, with 1 being

“strongly disagree” with the given statement and 5 being “strongly agree.” This particular

format focused primarily on need for achievement. Statements given to the participants

included, “I seldom set standards which are difficult for me to reach,” and “I enjoy difficult

work.”

Personality was measured using the mini-IPIP scales, also known as the 20 Big 5

Personality Characteristics (IPIP; Donnellan et al., 2006). This survey gave statements

describing behaviors with which participants rated from “very accurate”—a 5 on the scale—

down to “very inaccurate—a 1. Statements in the scale included, “I like order,” and, “I get upset

easily.”

Procedure

Data for this study was collected using a series of surveys distributed to 109 college

students on an online at www.surveymonkey.com. All participants filled out the same survey.

There were no control or experimental groups.
