Senior School Course Outline

VCE English 2012 YEAR 11 UNITS 1 AND 2


Over 40000 students in Victoria study VCE English in any given year. For most students undertaking the VCE, English is considered a compulsory subject. As most students study it, it is a chance to ensure that students leave their schooling armed with skills that you can use in the rest of your life. These skills in include critical thinking, skills in analysis and evaluation, critical reading and of course, speaking and writing using standard Australian English.

Text Selection
The Outcomes, texts and the order of study are as follows: Unit 1 Outcome 1 Reading and Responding Im Not Scared Outcome 2 Creating and Presenting Context: Australian Identity Outcome 3 Using Language to Persuade Single Language Analysis Unit 2 Outcome 1 Reading and Responding Othello Outcome 2 Creating and Presenting Context: Future Worlds Outcome 3 Using Language to Persuade Comparative Language Analysis Persuasive Speech

Over the 2 Units, coursework is worth 100% of the study score. You must satisfactorily meet all requirements of this subject to receive a Satisfactory grade. If you do not complete a work requirement for a specific Outcome, you CANNOT achieve a Satisfactory. (This means that when you sit the actual Outcome task it will only be used to give you a score.)

UNIT 1
AoS 1: Reading and Responding Outcome 1 is comprised of an analytical text response essay, and involves analysing how a text constructs meaning, conveys ideas and values, and is open to a range of interpretations. Length 600 800 words o Work Requirement for Outcome 1 Completion of ONE practice essay

AoS 2: Creating and Presenting In Outcome 2 you will draw on ideas and/or arguments suggested by our chosen Context Australian Identity for a specified audience and purpose. In addition, you will need to discuss and analyse decisions you have made about form, purpose, language, audience and context in the form of a written explanation In this unit, this outcome will be comprised of one extended folio piece in each of the imaginative, expository and persuasive genre. Text: True Blue by Peter Goldsworthy Total length: 900 - 1200 words Work Requirement for Outcome 2

o Completion of a written response, with explanatory statement, in each of the following forms Creative/Imaginative Expository Persuasive AoS 3: Using Language to Persuade Outcome 3 requires you to write a sustained written analysis based on the persuasive language used in the presentation of a current issue in the Australian Media. Length: 500 600 words. Work Requirement for Outcome 3

o Completion of ONE practice Language Analysis piece (500 600 words) o Completion of a Persuasive Techniques Summary Table

UNIT 2

AoS 1: Reading and Responding This task requires you to develop and justify a detailed interpretation of the text in an extended text response essay. Length: 1000 words o o Work Requirement for Outcome 1 Completion of ALL Act Review Questions Completion of ONE practice essay

AoS 2: Creating and Presenting On the Context of Future Worlds, you will write one sustained written text (imaginative, expository or persuasive) created for a specific audience and context, with a written explanation of decisions about form, purpose, language, audience and context. Text: Film Text Gattaca Length: 600- 800 words Work Requirement for Outcome 2

o Completion of a written response, with explanatory statement in the specified form (Imaginative, Expository or Persuasive). AoS3: Using Language to Persuade Outcome 3 involves 2 tasks. Part A- A comparative written analysis of the use of persuasive language in 2 persuasive texts that debate a current issue in the Australian media. Length: 1000 1200 words. Part B- Present a sustained and reasoned point of view, in oral form, on a current issue of the students choice. Length: 5-6 minutes Work Requirement for Outcome 3

o ONE practice Comparative Analysis piece (1000 words) o An extended planning page of notes showing references to research for the Persuasive Oral

THE EXAM The mid-year and end of year exam covers all 3 Areas of Study. Section A: Text Response

Senior School Course Outline

You will write on the text studied that semester. Section B: Writing in Context You will write about the selected Context for a nominated audience and purpose. You must use ideas from at least one of the Context texts studied. Section C: Analysis of Language Use You will analyse language and visual elements in unseen persuasive texts.
