14 February 2012 Darlene MacDonald Manager, Tourism Development Tourism Division Nova Scotia Department of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism World Trade and Convention Centre PO Box 456 -1800 Argyle Street, Suite 603 Halifax NS B3J 2R5 Re: Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act Dear Ms. MacDonald, As you are aware, the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act came into force on 29 May 2010. The Act supports the designation and protection of federally owned lighthouses with significant heritage value. On behalf of the federal government, the Parks Canada Agency is implementing the Act through its Heritage Lighthouse Program. As of 1 February 2012, 96 lighthouses across Canada have been nominated for designation under the Act through a public petition process. The number of petitions received illustrates the depth of attachment and appreciation that Canadians feel for these iconic buildings. To date, 14 lighthouses in Nova Scotia have been nominated for designation. The time to nominate lighthouses for designation is drawing to a close. Residents of Canada may nominate federally owned lighthouses for designation up to and including 29 May 2012 by forwarding a petition to Parks Canada. Petitions must be addressed to the Minister responsible for Parks Canada (the Minister of the Environment), specify which lighthouse is being nominated, and be signed by at least 25 residents of Canada who are 18 years of age or older. Parks Canada's website (www.parkscanada.gc.ca/lighthouses) provides more information about the Act, as well as a downloadable nomination package containing a petition form. Interested persons are also invited to contact the Heritage Lighthouse Program office at 819.934.9096 or lighthouses@pc.gc.ca . Sincerely,

Norman Shields Manager, Heritage Lighthouse Program Heritage Conservation and Commemoration Directorate
