Lesson Plan III

1. Lesson Objectives: Students will learn how to use an Academic Search Premier database and will be able to conduct research on the topic: Child Welfare Students will be able to identify advantages of using an Academic Search Premier database over search engines such as Google, Yahoo, etc.

3. Activities: Activity # 1: Lecture/demonstration: 1. The instructor asks students to open google.com on their computers and find two journal articles about child welfare that they could use in the academic essay. 2. Students discuss their results and obstacles they encountered using Google. 3. The instructor summarizes the most important disadvantages of using popular search engines and why is it inefficient way of doing research. Then, she introduces an Academic Search Premier database. 4. The instructor demonstrates to students how to use an Academic Search Premier and its various functions: Boolean operators and double quote marks Appropriate field selection (subject, abstract, geographic terms, all text, etc.) Limiters such as: peer-reviewed journals, type of publications (periodicals, books, primary source documents, etc.), date of publications and full text option Citations

Activity# 2: Brainstorming: The instructor asks students to brainstorm a list of keywords, word combinations, and categories they might use in their search to get to the results for the given problem (child welfare). They can think about the topic and select keywords according to categories: people, terms, organizations, places, objects, etc. The instructor writes all keywords on the whiteboard or type it in a Word document if classroom is not equipped in whiteboard. Then, individually students organize 3M list (must, might, mustnt) with the keywords they see on the whiteboard or projector and then they can try their individual searches using an Academic Search Premier database on their computers. Activity # 3: Group Activity: Students are asked to form groups of four students (6 groups) and each group is assigned a research topic. Every group is required to find five peer-reviewed journal articles published within last 3 years on one of the following topics:

Topic 1 (Group 1): Child Welfare: government policy Topic 2 (Group 2): Child Welfare: immigrants and minority families Topic 3 (Group 3): Child Welfare: child maltreatment Topic 4 (Group 4): Child Welfare: socioeconomic factors (housing, poverty) Topic 5 (Group 5): Child Welfare: educational attainment Topic 6 (Group 6): Child Welfare: family relations

7. Assessment 1. Clicker pre-test: Questions Have you ever had troubles with finding information using popular search engines such as Google or Yahoo? Have you ever heard about an Academic Search Premier database?

2. Questions to the audience: Ask audience about their previous experiences when they could not find a desired information on the Web. Ask audience what caused their frustration when they were using popular search engines (too many results?, results are not related?, etc.)

3. Final reflection: Ask audience how they benefited from the Academic Search Premier search and what kind of advantages it might bring to their everyday work or even life outside of work. Clicker post-test

Questions: 1. Do you feel enough comfortable using an Academic Search Premier to conduct research on the topic Child Welfare? 2. Are you going to use an Academic Search Premier in your work or for the other class assignments?
