Blue Skies by Ella Fitzgerald I chose to write on this piece because I personally believed this is one of the best

scat singing performances to be recorded. In the introduction of Blue skies Ella tries to adapt her voice to a sort of saxophone improvisation mirroring the instrument playing behind her. Initially you cant tell she is improvising especially from 0:23 to 0:47 because her voice blends naturally into a kind of call-andresponse with the trumpet playing in the background then from 0:47 it becomes more and more evident in the melody although most of her improvisation was in her scat solo. At 01:33 she quotes Here comes the bride at the beginning of her solo and Rhapsody in Blue at 1:43 just when her solo began to peak. I really enjoyed the piece being a huge fan of scat-singing and greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Dave Lambert and of course Louis Armstrong. The piece has an A-A-B-A 32 Bar form. From 0:22 to 1:10 the piece had a 4-bar melody and her improvised scat solo was for two and half chorus. This piece set mainly a happy and joyous mood after the melody was set, you can feel Ella Fitzgerald trying to excite her audience with the climatic scat singing which was really a joy especially to me. She builds up the excitement by first setting her melody then mirroring the instruments from her support (Paul Westons Ochestra) then improvising. Her band was very much involved in the her scat solo climax, they encouraged her as she built on her solo in such a natural way as she always does in most of her pieces.
