Dealing With Equations

ALGEBRA DAILY NEWS

STUDENT DOESN’T FIND OUT

WHAT “X” STANDS FOR-----
TEACHER SAYS
“THAT’S OKAY” !!
Students were dumbfounded a few hours ago when their math teacher told them
just to leave the letter in their answer. “My whole life has been centered around
finding out what ‘x’ stands for, and now this! I cannot believe it, but its true!” said
student Justin Rodriguez. A few students staged a protest outside, refusing to leave a letter on their
answer sheets. “I no can handle this,” remarked a student, who only revealed his first name,Trog, “how can
Trog have ‘x’ number of apple? Trog miss Kindergarten”
Equations have an equal sign.

You can do whatever you want to an

equation, as long as you do it to both
sides of the equation.
Obviously here we
want to get rid of the 6
from the left side.
x + 6 = 25
+ (-6) +(-6)
So we choose to add
its opposite to both
sides. x = 19
OK, big deal.
Trog know that
already, so what?
A monomial can 4y + 3y = 56g - 7
either be a letter, a
bunch of letters, a
number, or both So is 3y !
together.
Yes, -7 is 4y is a monomial !
also a
monomial!!
Yup! A monomial !!
In an equation we can add or subtract
…add the opposites of… any monomials
that we want to, as long as we do it to both
sides of the equation.
Let’s remove that “3y”
4y + 3y = 56g - 7 from the left side for fun.
+(-3y) +(-3y)
…so add its opposite!

4y = 56g – 7 + (-3y)

Uhhh….looks like
waste of time…
It is only a waste of
time when you do 4y + 3y = g - 7
not have a goal.
+7 +7
Let’s pretend
we want
the letter “g” by 4y + 3y + 7 = g
So, first thing is to
itself
get rid of that -7…
Good! Now can 7y + 7 = g
we add
anything
together? DONE!
It is okay to
have letters
in the answer!!!
Check out this SWEET Math
Rule!!!
If a bunch of
