Problem Statement:

Life Cycle Analysis of methanol from sugarcane bagasse that against Natural Gas. Methanol is produce in RCF Ltd at chembur, Mumbai from natural gas , As a fact it has one of the largest methanol production plant in India. So as to compare LCA of methanol from natural gas versus sugarcane bagasse you may assume that RCF also produce Methanol from Biomass ( sugarcane bagasse) to make it at same level for comparison.

Main Deliverables: 1. A complete framework of the LCA process and methodology of calculation is to be made. All further calculations will be made according to this framework. Changes might be made in the framework as and when needed. This framework should include the following. a. Goal of the LCA b. Outlining a flowchart showing all the stages involved in Methanol production right from cradle to grave. c. Analysis of the important parameters that will play a role in each of the steps in the above flow chart and compiling a list of all the above parameters. d. Stating any assumptions made in Step (b) and (c). 2. Emission calculations for the following steps involved in the manufacture of Methanol from biomass( sugarcane bagasse) will have to be completed Sugarcane production: This stage involves cultivation, harvesting and transport of sugarcane. Bagasse to syngas stage: It incorporates the milling process of sugarcane, as well as the pre-treatment and gasification of bagasse. Methanol production: It refers to syngas conditioning and methanol synthesis. Bonus Marks For calculating life cycle energy efficiency and FER
*FER, defined as the ratio of fuel energy content by energy fossil (Efossil) consumed during the methanol production process.

3. Emission calculations for the following steps involved in the manufacture of Methanol from Natural Gas will have to be completed Today's practical methanol production technology still employs the less efficient two-step process
by first generating synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) from natural gas (methane) The synthesis gas generated in the first step is then converted to methanol in the second step.

4. Compare both the process in term of emission, environmental impact and energy.
