The ensemble chooses one scale.

each member, one by one (in some pre-determined order, successively), plays a tone starting with the first tone of the scale (legato). this predetermined order is repeated throughout. at each turn, players may either repeat the previous scale tone they performed or move on to the next scale tone. movement from one scale tone to the next is not coordinated. at each turn, players may occasionally produce a colored noise sound instead of their current scale tone. at each turn, players may occasionally choose to sustain their tone. if sustaining, slowly crescendo and decrescendo the tone, as gradually as possible, for a long time (out of sync with the ensemble, resuming at some subsequent turn). tone durations increase then decrease over the course of the entire piece. the piece is over when the entire ensemble has ascended from the tonic to the octave and then returned to the tonic (scale swell). as continuous as possible. for a long time. maximum resonance.
