1. Using Technology
Technology has become such a large part of peoples social and work lives that its use has
become routine. We rarely think about using it to communicate, prepare work and entertain
ourselves. However, each time we use a piece of technological equipment, program or
software, we are called on to select which of the media would be the best choice. We almost
do this automatically.

Task 1
Think about your own use of technology in three different situations and list as many
programs, resources or equipment you might use in a typical week.
i) At school

socially with friend

2. Business Technology
You have looked at the history of the computer in another unit but there are many other
types of business equipment which come under the category of business technology.
These include the scanner, modems, digital cameras, phones/faxes and photocopiers. Many
people use electronic pointing tools for presentations, while office workers rely heavily on
binders, laminators and cutters to create impressive booklets and handouts.

Reminder: VET studies are based on a balance of skills and knowledge. You need to be
able to use equipment and resources and have knowledge of their history and the issues
around their use. Why? You might need to use a photocopier very often (skill) but you also
need to know how to use it safely and avoid fumes (OH&S knowledge) and how to repair it
(knowledge of where to get assistance).

Task 2A
Alexander Bain was a Scottish inventor who worked as a clockmaker and invented
many business machines. He took out the first patent for a fax machine on 27 May
1843, 33 years before the patent was given for the telephone. Most people think fax
machines were invented relatively recently but they only became really popular about
40 years ago. Here is a link telling you more about Bain. (If it doesnt work do a search
on Alexander Bain). www.thocp.net/biographies/bain_alexander.htm
Show you have looked him up by answering the following question. How many total
siblings did Bain have?
Brothers: ___________ Sisters: ___________

Task 2B
The first image scanner was built in 1957 by a team led by Russel Kirsch, and it was a
drum scanner. The first black and white image scanned on this machine was a
photograph of Kirsch's baby son, Walden. Here is a Wikipedia link to the inventor (or
search his name).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_A._Kirsch
Name two other inventions which they say developed from Kirschs scanner?

3. Revision
Remember why we revise and repeat?
Answer: So that the information which goes into our short term memories is transferred into
our long-term memories then back out when we need it through regular use.

For this course, there are a lot of the same or similar requirements in most units. These are
related to things like OH&S, Privacy, ethics, codes or practice, anti-discrimination and
business documents. The reason for this is that all of those issues are extremely important in
workplaces, and not only in Business. Wherever you finally work, you will find references to
all of those factors and many more you have touched on or read about in this course. Your
school is your simulated workplace for the sake of this course.

Task 3
Check that you are using your computer safely and correctly for OH&S purposes by
reading this link to advice from Mark Dohrmann and Partners, an ergonomics company
in Melbourne. Mark has been an engineer and ergonomist for many years and was
awarded an Order of Australia some years ago for designing instruments to assist
people with mobility problems. He did this work as a volunteer.
www.ergonomics.com.au/pages/400_useful_info/420_how_to_sit.htm
List three good tips from Marks website:

When you have checked the site, check your own work area and make adjustments.

4. Selecting Resources
For this section, you will need to create three different types of documents and show you
know how to select the appropriate business appropriate equipment for the task.

Task 4A
You are still working for MouseMat .com and your supervisor wants you to create the
following documents. He needs to check that you have the right equipment and can
choose the right software for the job. Please list everything you need.
i) Create and produce a short note telling staff members that the company will be
closing for the long weekend. List the equipment and software you need for the task.
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
ii) A client has left you a paper with a quoted price for a new building. You need a copy
for twelve board members. What office equipment will you use? (There are a couple
of things you could do).
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
iii) As the junior staff member, you will be in charge of organising morning tea for the
board members. What electrical equipment will you need?
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
iv) The boss wants some confidential documents destroyed. What do you use?

Task 4B
While using some of the selected software needed for tasks, you might need to get
help. The link below gives you a place to start with Microsoft queries.
www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/flyoutoverview.mspx
Print this page or a similar one, and keep in your folder or attach it to this booklet.

Remember? In another unit, you covered some ways to get assistance if you need it.
List three places you could find information and assistance when you are having
problems with applications.

5. Devices
To understand the input devices, watch this music video on Youtube.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMoxzLT0NNw&feature=related
If the above link is inactive, try the following key words: YouTube Input devices.

Task 5A
i) List eight input devices you saw on this video or a similar one.

ii) You use a number of these input devices during any week. List six you use regularly
at home or for school or work.

BSBWOR204A (V2)

Independent Schools Victoria, 2012

Task 5B
Wikipedia has a page explaining the use of input devices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Input_device
Now you know about input devices and realise you use them regularly, have a look at
a similar page for output devices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Output_device
Here is a list of devices, sort them into the correct columns. Look them up on the
Wikipedia site if you need assistance
Devices: Printer, Keyboard, Headphones, Mouse, Computer screen, Wii Remote,
Digital Camera, External Hard-drive.

6. Using Files
We all open, use, close and save files all day as part of our education and work. This unit
requires evidence that you do those things safely and in accordance with your organisations
procedures so we will start by using a document you have created for this Business course
you are studying.

Task 6A
i) Find and open one of the documents you have created in MS Word (or a similar
word processing application) for this course, for example, one of the documents you
created for the myMovie Company.
ii) At the bottom of the document, add two extra lines reading The writer of this
document is (your own full name) on the line below your name add the date and
Version 2.
iii) Rename the above document with a different name, saving to the schools preferred
location or to your own USB backup. Print the document and place it in your folder.

Task 6B
Scenario
John works in an office. He notices the printers are both low on ink (an ink jet) and
toner (a laser). His supervisor expects him to deal with it but there are no
replacements in the cupboard. Name three places he might be able to buy them?
I hope he remembers to keep the store invoice so he can get his money back from
Petty Cash. John can probably get these office supplies at:

7. Maintaining Technology
Whether you are using technology for home, school or work, you will need how to maintain it
in good working order, and do basic repairs and replacements. Most people learn to do this
by using technology at home or socially. If you dont know, you either ask someone or find
out online or in a manual.

Task 7A
Select two pieces of technological equipment (e.g., computers, printers, fax,
photocopier, mobile phone, camera, modem, scanner, binder, laminator). Name the
item and describe how you would replace or repair some part.

Task 7B
(i) Walk Through
With a partner, carry out a routine inspection of the technological equipment in a
classroom and both complete the following checklist.
This is a walk through which is also part of an OH&S check.

I have checked that none of the computer cords are frayed or look dangerous
I have checked there are no frayed cords
I have discussed the equipment with my work partner
I have given feedback to my teacher concerning any repairs or replacements the
equipment needs

I have made sure all of my work for this and other courses are regularly backed up
according to the schools policies.

ii) Observation and Group Discussion

The teacher can check you have completed this task. Ask him or her to sign off here.

I have observed this student actively participate in group discussions and

taking notes regarding repairing and replacing business technology.

The student has made regular backups of their data in accordance with the schools
procedures.

The

student has the skills and knowledge to be able to make basic repairs and
replacements to a range of business technology.
