Using Inquiry to Teach Social Studies

1. Teachers are encouraged to use case studies to develop inquiry and critical thinking skills, decision-making skills and deep knowledge when planning lessons around historical events, civics and law related education. 2. WebQuest Strategy: in this strategy, lessons and units focus on visits to virtual museums and historical sites. 3. Service Learning and Citizen Action: provides opportunities for students to participate in discussion and improve their skills in cooperative learning, decision-making, problem solving, inquiry and assisting in the community. 4. Teachers are encouraged to move away from exclusive use of textbooks and towards helping students to make more connections to the world beyond the classroom. 5. When we use inquiry-based learning, students are taught to use results of their social studies research to solve community problems through service learning projects.
