Properties of Quadratic Functions

factor form: y = a(x r)(x s)

Three forms of a quadratic function Standard form: y = ax2 + bx + c Vertex form: y = a(x h)2 + k

Ex1. The following TOV shows a relation between snowboard sale and profit made. Snowboards Sold Profit ($10 000s) (1000s) 0 -32 1 -14 2 0 3 10 4 16 5 18 6 16 7 10 8 0 9 -14 a) Show this relation is quadratic and predict the opening of the parabola.

b) Find the equation of the relation using the vertex form.

c) Find the equation of the relation using the factor form.

Ex2. Mr. Bertovic throws his hammer to a student who didnt complete homework. The height of the hammer above ground can be modelled by the quadratic function h(t) = -2t2 + 3t + 1, where h(t) is height in metres and t is time in seconds after the toss.

a) Find the height of the hammer when it leaves Mr. Bertovics hand.

b) If the student dodges and misses the hit, when will it land on the ground?

c) Find the maximum height of the hammer, using two different methods.
