David Olszak is a dog handler for the U.S. Marines at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia. He has completed two tours of duty as a handler in Iraq and now trains military police dogs.

Aiello, Ron. Email Interview. 12 Dec 2012. Aiello is the current president of the U.S. War Dog Association. He was a war dog handler for the Marine Corps during Vietnam and he started the War Dog Association to teach Americans the history and the importance of the role of war dogs during battle. In the beginning, the associations goal was to bring their dogs home. Now, they focus on adoptions of war dogs. Aiello was extremely helpful with my research. He sent me the 1943 Quartermaster War Dog Training book, the War Dog song, and led me to other war dog sites. I use one of his quotes in my research section. Ambulance Dog. Photograph. Burnam, John. Email Interview. 2-12-12. Burnam was a U.S. Army dog handler from 1966-1968. Burnam is the author of several books and he is currently the founder of the National War Dog Monument. I use several of his quotes in my project. Along with many other Vietnam War dog handlers, Burnam is working for a National Monument in Washington, DC.

Hertog, Mary Kay. Officials outline adoption process for military working dogs. Official website of the U.S. Air Force. August 2008. Mary Kay Hertog, who is the executive agent, for the Department of Defense and Military Working Dogs at the Pentagon. The quote is about the Robby Law that allowed Military working Dogs to be adopted after they retired or deemed no longer useful. Robby was a dog whose handler wanted to adopt him after his tour of duty but was denied by the military. Frankle, Rebecca. War Dog of the Week. 2012. Photograph. Foreign Policy, Washington, DC. The pictures include my home page image of Sergeant Z, who was killed in action. I use the image of Sergeant Rex and his handler Sergeant Mike Dowling as the cover of my reform section. The program Save-A-Vet helps rescue military and law enforcement working dogs and other service animals from being put down when their service is done. The program provides housing and relief for disabled veterans who help take care of retired military working dogs.

Hicks, Ed. E-mail Interview. 27 Feb 2012. Ed Hicks is the curator for the Battlefield Museum in Fayetteville, N. C. He answered my questions about the countrys

reaction when the Dogs For Defense called for Americans to donate their dogs. He was very helpful and sent me several photos that I use in my project in the World War II reaction section. These photos include the newspaper clipping about Rex the dog and the little girl, as well as a copy of Rexs military enlistment and discharge certificates.

Holderness, Terry. Telephone Interview. 31 Jan 2012. My Uncle Terry is the police chief of Ashland, Oregon, and a retired captain who trained military police dogs for more than thirty years. He told me the successful military police dog is one who likes to play hide and seek, and the key to the dogs success was in the relationship between the handler and the dog. Houseman, Clem. dir. McKelvey, D. Theodore. E-mail interview, 5 May 2012. Sgt. McKelvey is a member of the U.S. War Dog Association. Theodore McKelvey sent me pictures of his K9 unit in the Korean War, which I use in my Korean War Dog section. He shared the story of his dog Judy, and sent me the newspaper clipping of her death by Chinese soldiers.

Jilly, Cooper. Animals In War. 2nd. London, Great Britain: William Hienman, 1984. Print. This book focuses on all animals used in war. A chapter in the book is dedicated to Edwin Richardson, who established the first war dog training school in Europe. I used this information in my WWI section on training. The greatest problem was that training did not always work with the noise of the battlefield.

Chene, Evelyn. Silent Heroes. Souvenir Press. 4 Apr. 2010. Print. This marvelous collection documents the fearless creatures that went beyond training and duty to display selfless acts of devotion to man during wartime.

Kiser, Toni. Personal Interview. 20 Jan 2012. Kiser is the registrar at the National World War II Museum. She created the "Loyal Forces: The Animals in WWII" exhibit. She is also writing a book about animals in WWII. Before I interviewed her, I was going to focus on all animals used in war. After she told me about the loyalty of dogs, I realized I needed to focus on war dogs.

Lemish, Micheal. War Dogs. United States: Library Of Congress, 1996. Print. This book was written as a tribute to American war dogs. It was very helpful because it gave me a clear understanding of the history of dogs used in the United States. I used some of the information prior to WWI from this book in my website.

Rogak Lisa. The Dogs of War. New York, NY: St. Martins Press, 2011. Print. This book focuses on transformations of American War Dogs since WWI. Several chapters in the book go into detailed historical accounts of how training, veterinary care and protection have improved. I was able to gather my information on veterinary care from this book. It also emphasizes the importance of bonding with the dog.
