CLOSE UP VIEW OF STEVEDORES LIFTING CHAINS. PATENT CLEVLOK HOOKS ENSURE SAFE LIFT BUT LIMIT DAMAGE TO THE EDGES CAUSED BY THE NORMAL CHOKE RING LIFT. SURFACE RUST INSIGNIFICANT TO END USE.

STEEL PLATES IN THE SLING


TYPICAL BUNDLE IN THE STEVEDORES LIFTING CHAINS. PATENT CLEVLOK HOOKS ENSURE HORIZONTAL POSITIONING IS MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT LIFT, PREVENTING RISK OF FREE FALL PLATES SLIPPING OUT OF BUNDLES.

THIS MACHINE IS USED THROUGHOUT THE LOADING OF THE FIRST AND SOMETIMES ALSO THE SECOND PARCEL(S). WHEN FERRO PARCELS NEED TO BE STOWED AT ENDS OF HOLDS WHERE THE OVERHANG PRECLUDES SKIP TRIMMED STOWAGE. SKILLED OPERATORS CAN BE REQUIRED TO STOW TO A HEIGHT OF IN EXCESS OF 6M.

FERRO STOW ON COMPLETION


TYPICAL FERRO CHROME STOW AGAINST A BULKHEAD. THIS STOW HAS BEEN PAYLOADED THROUGHOUT THE LOADING BY MEANS OF THE PATENT SPECIALIST TELESCOPIC BOOM MACHINE.

PREPARING THE STOW FOR SEPARATION PLATES


MANUAL HAND TRIMMING IS OFTEN REQUIRED TO TIDY UP THE FACE OF THE STOW. THIS MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO GET THE BASE OF THE SEPARATION PLATES TO BE POSITIONED AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE THE BASE OF THE STOW. THIS ENSURES MAXIMUM UTILISATION OF AVAILABLE TANKTOP AREA FOR THE REST OF THE STOW IN THAT HOLD

MANUAL HAND TRIMMING CONTINUES IN THE BACKGROUND WHILE THE BUNDLE OF PLATES HAS BEEN OPENED AND THE PLATES ARE BEING LAID OUT FOR PREASSEMBLY FOR THE WELDERS.

PREPARING THE SEPARATION PLATES FOR THE WINGS


MANUAL BENDING OF THE PLATES, IN THIS CASE OVER THEIR LENGTH, IS REQUIRED TO ASSUME THE SHAPE OF THE AREA WHERE THE STOW MEETS THE HOPPERTANKS. IN THE BACKGROUND THE BASE OF THE SEPARATION HAS STARTED.

SECURING THE SEPARATION PLATES IN THE WINGS


SECURING THE PREBENT SEPARATION PLATES TO WING TANKS AND THE FRAMES AROUND THE AREA WHERE THE STOW MEETS THE HOPPERTANKS. TO AVOID HAVING TO CUT IN AROUND THE FRAMES, THESE WING SEPARATIONS ARE OFTEN EXTENDED VERTICALLY AGAINST THE FRAMES.

SECURING THE BASE OF THE SEPARATION CONTINUES IN THE BACKGROUND WHILE THE REST OF THE TEAM PREASSEMBLE SEPARATION PLATES ON THE TANK-TOP.

SECURING THE INDIVIDUAL PLATES IS DONE BY MEANS OF TACK WELDING SHOWN HERE IS THE TYPICAL LENGTH OF ONE OF THE WELDS. A SKILLFUL WELDER SHOULD BE ABLE TO EFFECT A GOOD BOND BETWEEN THE PLATES WITHOUT BURNING THROUGH OR NOT HAVING ENOUGH PENETRATION OF THE WELD BETWEEN THE PLATES.

TO ENSURE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THE HOMOGENUS INTEGRITY OF THE SEPARATION, THE INDIVIDUAL WELDS SHOULD BE NO LESS THAN ABOUT 30mm IN LENGTH AND THE INTERSPACING BETWEEN TACK WELDS SHOULD BE ABOUT NO MORE THAN ABOUT 250mm.(A WORK BOOT LENGTH)

THE ARROW INDICATES THE DIRECTION IN WHICH THE PREASSEMBLED PLATES WILL BE HAND DRAWN. THIS CONFIGURATION OF THE PLATES (ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER) IS OBVIOUSLY KNOWN AS THE ROOFTILE STYLE. THIS WAY ENSURES MINIMAL PROTRUSIONS TO MECHANICAL DISCHARGE APPLIANCES, THIS CONFIGURATION IN CONSTRUCTION OF ALL SEPARATIONS IS BY FAR THE MAJORITY.

AS IN THE PREVIOUS SLIDE, THE ARROW INDICATES THE DIRECTION IN WHICH THE PRE-ASSEMBLED PLATES WILL BE HAND DRAWN UP OVER THE STOW, HENCE THE ROOFTILE STYLE. TOTAL WEIGHT OF TWO PLATES TACK WELDED TOGETHER IS ABOUT 100kg. A HOLE BURNED IN THE LEADING EDGE ALLOWS THE ROPE (WITH BASIC STEEL HOOK) TO DRAW THE PLATES OVER THE STOW.

TWO PRE-ASSEMBLED PLATES ALMOST IN POSITION ON THE STOW, AGAIN AS THE ARROW SHOWS, OVER THE HI BASE PLATES, IN THE ROOFTILE STYLE POSITION. TO SAVE TIME, THIS TEAM STARTED FROM THE CENTRELINE AND WORKED TOWARDS THE PORT SIDE. THE SECOND TEAM STARTED FROM THE STBD SIDE FRAMES AND WORKED TOWARDS THIS FIRST LAID PLATE.

A LENGTH OF PRE-ASSEMBLED PLATES ALMOST IN POSITION


A SECOND PREASSEMBLED LENGTH OF PLATES ALMOST IN POSITION ON THE STOW. ARROW CLEARLY SHOWS THE ROOFTILE STYLE POSITION OVER THE BASE PLATES. THIS TEAM ONLY TACKS THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE PREASSEMBLED PLATES. THE VERTICAL TACK WELDS (MARKED BY CIRCLE) WILL BE DONE BY BOTH TEAMS ONCE THE WHOLE SEPARATION IS IN PLACE.

THE PREASSEMBLED LENGTH OF PLATES TACKED IN POSITION. NOTE CONSISTENCY IN TACKWELD LENGTH AND SPACING BETWEEN SAME. VERTICAL EDGES STILL RAISED PENDING RETURN OF WELDER AND TEAM TO EFFECT TACKWELDS AS SHOWN.

TYPICALLY DESCRIBED IN THE INDUSTRY AS A 2 & HI SEPARATION, THE WELDER IS SHOWN COMPLETING THE VERTICAL TACK WELDS BETWEEN THE PREASSEMBLED PLATES. AN AKWARD POSITION TO BE WORKING IN, THE WELDER IS HELD IN POSITION BY A BASIC MEANS OF A ROPE AROUND THE WAIST HELD BE THE SAME TEAM AS USED FOR THE DRAWING UP OF THE PLATES.

NOTE POSITION OF THE WING PLATES AGAINST THE FRAMES. THIS PREVENTS FERRO FROM GRAVITATING DOWN BETWEEN THE FRAMES INTO THE PARCEL BELOW THE SEPARATION.

THREE PARCELS OF FERRO MANGANESE SEPARATED FROM EACH OTHER AGAINST THE FRD BULK OF A HOLD. NOTE THE SLIGHTLY ELEVATED LIP, ENSURING ALWAYS THAT THE PARCELS ARE CONTAINED BEHIND THE SEPARATION
