MPS Management Team Attends LEAN Training

By Megan Zalar, Marketing Communications Specialist, MacLean Power Systems

Members of the MacLean Power Systems Management Team attended a 2- day planning and LEAN training session in early March. There were five main objectives to the event: Update the team on MPS overarching plan to double sales and profits by 2015. Transform the mode of business operations from a reactive to a proactive approach. Gain insight into the role of the management team in driving the successful execution of the overarching vision and strategy. Create a roadmap for physical and cultural transformation that engages the hearts and minds of all individuals throughout MacLean Power Systems. Learn about the powerful and proven tools of LEAN available to drive and achieve an enterprisewide transformation.

The first half day covered the first objective and began with a detailed presentation by Tom Smith. Toms presentation centered around MPS 2010 finish and, more importantly, MPS goals for 2011 and beyond. Obviously, a very important step in promoting the cultural transformation is knowing the destination. The discussion was very detailed and thorough, providing all in attendance with an excellent opportunity to see firsthand the goals of the organization and the roadmap to completing the journey. The next two days covered the rest of the objectives and were led by two consultants from TBM, a global leader in business performance improvement and transformation management. The presentations and discussions covered a wide variety of topics within the construct of LEAN applications and Continuous Improvement practices, including: The roots of LEAN manufacturing Leadership Development

Strategy Deployment Deliberate Practice Team Building Barrier Recognition KPI Management Managing Resistance LEAN/CI Tools and their application. The highlights of the days activities were two activities in which the team participated. The first was a factory simulation using an elaborate game to make widgets. The simulation included everything one would expect to find in a typical factory: Inventory, WIP, excessive movement and operations, inefficient processes, disjointed procedures, etc. The goal of the game was to service the customer by filling his order in the established timeframe. To put it mildly, this was easier said than done. The first week of production was a disaster. WIP and inventory increased, but

With the factory simulation in full swing, MPS team members head to their stations to begin production.

the customer was not serviced. Paperwork was generated but parts were lost and quality decreased at a rapid pace. Productivity was virtually non-existent, and past dues kept piling up. After the first week, the team was given the opportunity to address the glaring issues with the simulated factory. Using application of LEAN concepts, the team reconstructed the production process from top to bottom, including new procedures for inventory management and information flow. As a result, the second week of the simulation ran much more smoothly. The factory was rearranged to promote one piece flow and eliminate waste and non-value added activities. Productivity increased, as did quality, and the customer was now able to be serviced within his expected lead time. The simulation was an excellent example of what can be accomplished through the application of LEAN tools and techniques. The second activity was not nearly as elaborate, but taught a valuable lesson about the importance of communication and involvement/empowerment. The activity was called Site-Central, and involved two separate groups. The Site group was a small group charged with the task of getting the other, larger Central group to perform a series of actions. Since the entire team was not able to participate, the rest of the team looked on, taking note of the sequence of events leading up to the dramatic conclusion. While the team was able to accomplish the ultimate goal of the Site-Central exercise, everyone learned an extremely valuable lesson about communication and teamwork. In total, the meeting was a big success. It was informative, educational, and rewarding. The MPS Management team expressed great satisfaction with the event and its outcome. The timing of the meeting was also quite appropriate, given MPS record year and the explicit need to capitalize on the momentum generated in 2010. The rollout of LEAN and Continuous Improvement will remain a focal point for MacLean Power Systems in 2011 and beyond. It is an essential part of the goals we will accomplish in the next 5 years. We will continue to accelerate the pace of improvement as we progress on our LEAN journey.

METFORM INTRODUCES INTEGRALOK

By Lisa Prondzinski, Account Executive Industrial Accounts, MacLean Vehicle Systems

MVS introduced its newest product, IntegralokTM, at the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) Conference in Tampa, Florida, February 8-11. IntegralokTM is the name chosen for the next generation of Axilok with improved design features, including a ratchet mechanism, for ease of installation. The patent pending IntegralokTM system is an integrated assembly comprised of four components: a nut, a hardened steel washer, a locking collar and a spring (not shown). The Metform engineering team has developed the design improvements. The new design will eventually replace the existing truck/trailer product but is initially targeted to address expansion of use in the trailer market, where the current product has limited usage. TMC is a private industry show geared toward engineering and recommended maintenance practices in the truck/trailer market. Feedback for the new product from show attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Metform is preparing IntegralokTM for Fall 2011 production timing.

MacLean Power Systems Recovering After Flooding

By Megan Zalar Marketing Administrator, MacLean Power Systems Franklin Park On Saturday, July 24th, MacLean Power Systems Franklin Park plant was again in the midst of severe flooding in the factory and offices after 6" to 7" of rainfall hit Chicago and its suburbs. This is now the second time in two years that Franklin Park has had to recover from flooding due to record amounts of rainfall in the Chicagoland area. Fortunately, the devastation of this flood is nothing like the flood of September 2008, where production was shut down during the height of hurricane storm Outside MacLean Power Systems Franklin Park restoration production; computers on Sunday, July 25, 2010. and equipment were damaged; and workers were displaced for nearly thinking of the maintenance and production three months while the first floor offices departments, as soon as the water levels were restored. This year, due to the quick rose Saturday morning, they went through the factory picking up as much electronics and equipment as they could to minimize the damage. Management was then called and within 24 hours, a storm restoration company was on-hand to assess the damage. On Sunday, they found that some areas of the plant were flooded with 8" of water with at least 3" in the office areas. By Sunday afternoon, power had been restored and cleanup had already begun. By Monday morning, approximately 50 first floor employees were moved to the second floor to facilitate the restoration process, as the floors and drywall will again need to be replaced; production was back up and running after only 3 hours; and restoration to the first floor had begun.

MPS Recovering After Flooding continued from page 1

This is the third time in MPS history that production has been shut down due to flooding. The first was on August 14, 1987, during the 100 Year Flood rainfall. The Franklin Park plant was shut down after a two-day rainfall logged about 9.35" of water. Approximately 18" to 24" of water

flooded the plant and production was shut down for a full week. We have learned from our past experiences and previously made changes to prevent more severe damage in events like this. We are better prepared, as well, to recover from storm damage as shown by the fact

that we lost less than a half day of production. These are valuable lessons, especially given that we serve the power industry that is regularly called to recover after storms. Once again, we can credit the fast recovery to the dedicated effort and teamwork of our employees.

With over 11,000 people in attendance, MacLean Power Systems debuted their new message, Find the Answers with MacLean Power Systems, meaning MPS is a single source solution not only for products, but services as well. The IEEE committee, headed by Paul Lindemulder, Marketing Services Director, along with his staff and key marketing and sales personnel, spent numerous hours over the last several months preparing for the April show. This years MPS booth showcased our full capabilities, highlighting several new innovations in our products, supply chain and engineering fields. The 2010 IEEE PES T&D Convention was also the unveiling of the new APEX Insulator Systems brand for our non-ceramic silicone rubber transmission insulators, as well as the addition of polymer and porcelain cutouts to our family of products. In addition to our product lines, the MacLean Power Systems booth was equipped with four computer kiosks to use for product and engineering demonstrations, as well as other multimedia projects including PowerPoints, videos, and online interactive programs. But it wasnt all business at the convention this year, as the MPS booth also featured a Money Booth, voted by T&D World Magazine as the Best Booth Toy at the show. During the course of the convention, attendees were given the opportunity to enter a raffle; if their name was called, they were given 90 seconds to grab as much cash as they could. MPS partnered with Ballyhoo Mobile to send out mobile messages to the attendees on products, demonstrations and the time when the next raffle drawing would be held. The raffle and the mobile messaging were a resounding success for MPS and made them the hit of the show. The 2012 IEEE PES Transmission & Distribution Convention and Exposition will be held on May 7 10 in Orlando, Florida.

MPS Hosts Strategic Sourcing Summit

By Megan Zalar Marketing Administrator, MacLean Power Systems Franklin Park In September, the Global Sourcing Department of MacLean Power Systems hosted a two-day Strategic Sourcing Summit at the Embassy Suites in Rosemont, IL. Approximately 50 employees from all areas of the MPS family participated in the meeting which had several key objectives, including introducing the Global Sourcing department to the MPS cross functional team, introducing the Strategic Sourcing Rating Process (SSRP), and brainstorming global sourcing initiatives to facilitate the future growth of MPS. Over the course of the two-day meeting, small groups consisting of people from the engineering, marketing, operations, and global sourcing departments utilized the new SSRP procedure developed by the Global Sourcing Department to generate ideas that would increase profitability and sales for MacLean Power Systems. Each small group came up with a list of projects and entered them into the SSRP worksheet so that each individual could become familiar with the process. This program will be used to validate, rate and prioritize potential projects for MPS. In addition, the MPS employees were formally introduced to the new Global Sourcing Department and its employees and their role as a resource to provide alternate solutions to introduce new products to the MPS market basket and increase protability. These two days resulted in a strong initia tive that will be the foundation for growth at MacLean Power Systems.

Meeting attendees develop ideas in small groups at the Strategic Sourcing Summit.
