About Timun Mas Timun Mas is an antertaining Indonesian folklore with some wise messages that we can adopt to our life. This story comes from west Java. Timun Mas becomes very popular folklore in Indonesia since there were so many publishers published the story into folklores collection books. 3. Plot Summary The story begins by the willingness of an old widow who wanted to have a child. She prayed and a giant heard it. The giant gave her magical cucumber seeds and said that she would have a baby. In fact, the giant said that he would eat the child if it was a girl. When the child, Timun Mas grew into a beautiful girl, the giant came to the widow`s hut. However, the widow asked Timun Mas to run away before the giant arrived to their hut. The widow gave Timun Mas some magical stuff; cucumber seeds, needles and salt. Then the giant chased Timun Mas. When the giant almost catched her, Timun Mas threw the cucumber seeds and suddenly a wide cucumber field appeared. The giant ate the cucumbers and forgot to chase Timun Mas. After eating the cucumbers, he remembered to chase Timun Mas. Timun Mas was almost catched again but she threw needles behind and a bamboo forest appeared. It slowed down the giant`s step. But the giant could pass it. Timun Mas threw her last stuff, salt. Suddenly, a wide sea appeared and the giant sank into it. Timun Mas went home to meet her mother and then they lived happily ever after. 4. Education Level This drama is performed by Junior High School students, because the dialogues are long and the dictions are suitable at least for Junior High School students. 5. Characters, Characterizations and the Costumes a. Timun Mas She is beautiful, kind and love her mother so much. Timun Mas wears ordinary ancient Javanese clothes; kemben or simple kebaya and jarit fabric. The color of her clothes are bright.

b. the Widow She is old and poor. But her life is bright because she have a good daughter, Timun Mas. She really loves Timun Mas and it gives her a braveness to cheat the giant in order to save Timun Mas. She wears dark-colored kebaya and jarit fabric. c. the Giant It is the antagonist character that has a big body and big voice. This character can be played by a fat student or very tall student. He really loves to eat girl and he is very greedy. He wears a black clothes from top to down. For the wild effect, he can wear a very untidy pant made from rice sack or tearful fabric. 6. Properties a. Hut, cucumber field, bamboo forest and sea. It can be made from cartons. Paint the surface with the suitable colors. Add a small window and a door, leaves for the cucumber seeds, bamboo leaves for the bamboo forest and wave shape for the sea. Give triangle construction behind it to make it able to stand. The height of these properties based on the story. b. Cucumber Blow an oval green baloon, decorate it with striped golden papers tip to tip. Stick it to the cucumber field with a double tape to make easy when the widow have to take the cucumber. c. Baby girl The baby that lays in the cucumber can be represented by a baby doll. d. Cucumber seeds, needles and salt At the most performances, the stuff presented by the real stuff. But in this project, we can use pictures of cucumber seeds, needles and salt. We can find it from the internet and print it or we can draw it by ourselves. Take the big size to make the audiences clearly see what Timun Mas throws. 7. Setting The setting in this drama are two; the widow`s hut and the forest. 8. Approximately Playing Time 20-30 minutes.

9. Theme The theme are about bravery and determination. This story is about the bravery of a widow to cheat a giant in order to save her daughter. And this story also shows the determination of Timun Mas to keep her own life. 10. Message Through the story, we can learn that if we have a determination and bravery, we can achieve what we are really want. In the other side, it gives us a message to be not greedy because it will be harmful in the future.

11. Audience The story is suitable for all ages, from kids to adult. It can be played at the postexamination time, which the school usually held some competition. Because of that, the audience will mostly teachers and other students. 12. Stagecraft, Sound Effect and Lighting The widow`s hut and the forest can be laid one beside another. But, because there is an act of the giant chased for Timun Mas, the forest must be longer than the hut area. The background of the settings is same, the woods. The sound effect takes an important part of the drama. When the story is happy, a happy music must be played. When the giant come, a creepy tones can be played to make it more dramatic. And when the giant chase Timun Mas, we must choose the panic music to make the audiences are really drawed into the story. For lighting, it is played based on the performance on the stage. When the giant appears, the lighting is darker than before to gain the horror effect of the giant. 13. Performance Setting 1 (In The Widows Hut ) (start with a widow that sit down on the ground and pray) Narrator : Once upon a time, lived an old widow in the forest. She was a farmer and she had been living alone for a long time. Then she began to feel lonely. She want to have a child to accompany her in her old time, but it is impossible. Then she prayed to the God every night, beg to have a child to grow.

Widow

: God, please give me a baby to be my child. I will really thankful if You answer my pray. (sobs) I will do anything You want if You give me a baby.

Narrator

: Then, unpurposely a big black giant passed through the widow`s hut and hear her pray.

Giant

: Hmm...a baby?(he murmurs) Old widow, coming out!

Widow

: (shocks) Who..who is that?

Giant Ha..ha..ha..!!! Widow

: I am the giant, I heard your pray and if you want, I can fulfil it.

: (scares, gets out from the hut slowly) What do you want as the payback?

Giant

: Ha..ha..ha..!!! you are a smart woman! I can let you live happily if you get a son, but if you get a daughter, you have to give her to me as my prey. I like the taste of a girl`s flesh!! Will you accept my deal?

Widow Giant

: Yes, i will accept it. What must I do then? : Take this cucumber seeds and plant it in your garden. You can get your child when the cucumbers are ripe.

Narrator

: The widow took the seeds and the giant left the widow`s hut. At the next day, the widow planted the seeds in front of her hut. She grew the plants and gave the best treatment to the plants. Time went by, the plants produced a lot of cucumbers and these were ready to be harvested.

Widow

: God, it is a sunny day. Working on rice farm makes me hungry. I will take one cucumber from the garden as my lunch.

Narrator

: The widow chose the biggest cucumber. The color of the cucumber was not like the others, it was yellow. Then she brought it into her hut and cut the cucumber. She was so shock because she saw a baby laid there in the cucumber. It was a baby girl and she start to cry.

Widow Giant

: Oh my God!! How it can be happened??? : (comes from the forest)

Ha..ha..ha..!!! I heard the baby crying!! She have a nice smell and I think she will have a delicious flesh on her 17th birthday!! I will pick her up 17 years again, old woman!!! (leaves the widow`s hut) Widow : (watches the baby) I can`t let you become his prey. I must protect you from him. Because you came from the cucumber, I will call you Timun Mas. Narrator : The widow took care Timun Mas well. Timun Mas grew into a beautiful girl and she was very kind to her mother. They lived happily until Timun Mas` 17th birthday. At the dawn, the widow woke Timun Mas and ask her to run. Widow Timun Mas Widow : Timun Mas, wake up! You have to go and save your life!!! : What do you mean, mother? : Today a giant will take you as his prey because of my deal with him 17 years ago. I really wanted a child and he could fulfil it, but he would take the child if the child is a girl!! (sobs) Timun Mas Widow : Oh my God! What must I do now, mother? : Here, take these needles, cucumber seeds and salt. Just run for your life and throw it behind if the giant almost catch you. Go! Timun Mas : i hope we can be together again, mother. (hugs the widow and crying, then starts to run) Narrator Giant Widow : Not a long time, the giant came from the forest. : Where is she, old woman? Ha..ha..ha..!!! : She is still taking a bath. She thought that clean body will give a better taste. Giant Narrator : Ha..ha..ha..!!!! She is a smart girl! I will wait for her! : The giant waited Timun Mas for a long time, then he asked the widow again. Giant : She must be finished to clean her body. Where is she??

Widow

: She is still wash her hair. Her hair is very long so she need more time to wash it.

Giant Narrator Giant Widow Giant

: Tell her to make it fast!!! : Then the giant waited Timun Mas until the sun was on it top position. : Where is she??????!!! : She is still drying her hair. She ... (stopped by giant`s voice) : Don`t lie to me!!!! (grabs the widow`s shoulder) Where is she???!!!!!!!!!!

Widow Giant

: She..she is in the hut.. : (breaks the hut and sees that Timun Mas is not in the hut) AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (starts to run, chasing for Timun Mas)

Narrator

: The giant started to chase Timun Mas. By his supernatural power, he could know Timun Mas` direction. Not a long time, he saw Timun Mas ahead and he fastened his steps.

Giant

: Timun Mas!!!!!! I will catch you!!!!

SETTING 2 ( In the forest) Timun Mas Narrator : Oh, no!! He is here!! : just a second before the giant catching Timun Mas, Timun Mas threw the cucumber seeds from her mother. Suddenly, cucumber plants grew fastly and produced a lot of big cucumber. The giant then had his appetite to eat the cucumbers because of the hot weather. Giant Narrator : It is fresh! Ha..ha..ha..!! : After eating a lot of cucumbers, the giant remembered that he must catch Timun Mas. Then he started to run again, chased Timun Mas. Giant Timun Mas Narrator : I will make you as my dinner soon!!!! : (gasps) i have to run faster! (throws the needles) : The needles grew into a wide bamboo forest with a lot of torns. It made the giant struggled ebough to pass the forest. But, the forest still can`t block his steps. Giant : You can`t escape from me, Timun Mas!!!!

Timun Mas

: Oh my God! Why he still can pass the forest?! I just have salt in my hand, how can salt become more dangerous than needles??

Narrator

: The giant almost catched Timun Mas, but Timun Mas threw her last stuff, salt. Suddenly, a very wide sea appeared and the giant fell into it.

Giant Narrator

: AAARRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!! (starts to sink) : The giant drowned into the sea and never appeared again. Then Timun Mas ran to her mother and they lived happily ever after.

(End by a meeting of the widow and Timun Mas. They hugs each other and the lighting only focuses on them. The happy music is played and then the lighting turn off) -The End -999
