addition to high expectations to meet the academic needs of students, there is a heightened awareness to the importance of students emotional and social needs. One behavior that has a direct impact on these needs as well as the overall climate of a school is bullying. Oakview Middle School adopted the implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program as a means to educate students on what bullying is and what to do about it when they see it. There are four levels of the long-term implementation of the program: school-level, individual- level, classroom-level, and community-level components. The 2010-2011 school year focused on the first three levels but Oakviews mission for the upcoming school year is to now implement the community-level components. In order to promote the program and educate the community about the need for such a program, Oakview students affected by bullying and high school students that served as mentor Bully Busters were called upon to speak about their experiences. The video I created, with the assistance of one of our esteemed Bully Busters, will give me the capability to share the program with the community. After the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire was administered early last school year, several changes were implemented in response to what the students reported. A kick-off assembly symbolized the change the students requested for a safe and bully-free environment. Rules against bullying were posted and enforced. Meetings were held with students and parents in regard to bullying behaviors. Staff received training about what to do when students reported and how to help develop resiliency in students. High school mentors or Bully Busters as they named themselves came each Wednesday morning to co-facilitate weekly meetings educating students on how to fight bullying. Our commitment to improve the climate at Oakview and improve peer relations will only be stronger for this school year. The purpose of the video will be to take it to community members (local business owners, the Rotary Club, the Optimist Club, etc) and other schools in Lake Orion to ask for their support in conjunction with our efforts. I would like for our Oakview students to design a sign Lake Orion Supports Bully Busters to hang in all the windows downtown Lake Orion. My dream would be to see this program implemented K-12. I would also like for community members to come in and participate in the dialogues that take place Wednesday mornings. I want wide-spread conversations to take place about bullying to strength the efforts to take a stand against the behavior
