TEXT 1 I Malaysia, being home to many cultures and races, has a variety of festivals and celebrations.

The indigenous people, or Orang Asli, also have their own unique celebrations. The Mah Meri tribe, for example, celebrate their new year by praying to their ancestors in a festival known as Hari Moyang. In preparation for the new year celebrations, the Mah Meri tribe decorate their homes and place an altar in their garden to enable them to pray to their ancestors. Remembering and praying for the dead on new years day is a custom that has been practiced for generations. Since the first two days are devoted to prayers and rituals, the Mah Meri tribe only welcome visitors on the third day of the cele brations. On this day, visitors are greeted by the womenfolk before they are taken to the ancestral hut or Rumah Moyang to receive the blessings of the Mah Meri tribal chief. Visitors are then invited to see the traditional dances which are performed by the Mah Meri. Those who are interested can also take part in these performances. Simple refreshments like coconut water are served to the guests while they are watching the exotic dances. Next, they are treated to a demonstration of the Mah Meri tribes renowned handicraft skills. The womenfolk who are experts in weaving pandan leaves, demonstrate how to make decorative hats and other headgear using the leaves. These make good souvenirs and are usually given out free to visitors before they leave the place. In addition, the tribesmen, who are skilled woodcarvers, also demonstrate their carving skills. Their carvings include figurines, blowpipes and accessories like bracelets. These items are usually sold during the celebrations. Adapted from: Selangor Splendours, 2004. 10
