The NEW Carbon-Z
Yak 54
Forget what you thought you knew about electric aircraft construction and performance. The
new Carbon-Z Yak 54 is a giant leap in both that takes Bind-N-Fly
aircraft capabilities to a
whole new level. Knife edge loops, hovering torque rolls at half throttle, ballistic uplines no
longer is this kind of performance the privilege of a select few with the time and money to
build large-scale 3D airplanes. The Bind-N-Fly Carbon-Z Yak 54 lets you experience the
same precision and unlimited performance in the time it takes to charge a battery, for
a fraction of the price.
Its all made possible by Carbon-Z construction. Developed by world aerobatic champion
Quique Somenzini, Carbon-Z uses a patent-pending technique to fuse the lightweight durabil-
ity of a molded Z-Foam
structure with the strength and rigidity of carbon ber. The result
is an airframe that is as strong as or stronger than
balsa with an exterior that looks great in all tem-
peratures and weather. This advanced airframe,
combined with the custom brushless power system
Quique developed for it, gives the Carbon-Z Yak 54
a stunning thrust-to-weight ratio of 2:1 and 3D
performance that knows no limits.

UNIQUE FEATURES
The BH Models Stuka is covered in a
unique printed covering that shows off
the Stukas scale panel lines, camouage
paint and the German insignia markings
of that time. The Stuka was designed to be
powered by a 1.20 4-stroke or by an elec-
tric power (EP). A convenient hatch on the
bottom of the Stuka allows for easy access
to the wing bolts, radio gear and/or a pos-
sible battery tray for the EP system. Inside
the hatch, the elevator and rudder push-
rods are already installed and awaiting
FLIGHTTEST
I really enjoyed ying the BH Models Stuka at the dry lakebed near my home. I
recommend that you start out on a runway that is at least 300 feet long until you are
comfortable ying the Stuka. Its big main wheels, oleo struts and sprung tailwheel
really help to soak up any bumps in the runway. With the application of up-elevator
to hold down the tailwheel, the Stuka will gracefully taxi out to the runway. To
counter torque-steer, a little application of right-rudder is needed to keep the Stuka
tracking straight down the runway. The Stuka is ready to break ground in about 50-
75 feet. The Stuka showed no tendency to nose-over during takeoff. Upon landing,
keep the Stukas speed up and y it under power onto its main wheels and then cut
the throttle. Remember to steer with the rudder and use the elevator to keep the
Stuka level until the tailwheel wants to settle to the runway. Deploying the Stukas
aps will improve its slow-speed stability when landing.
GENERAL FLIGHT PERFORMANCE
Stability: The Stuka is as easy to y as any .60-size trainer is. One of my favorite
moves from a high altitude is to cut the throttle back to a third, deploy the aps, and
then push the nose down into a steep dive. The Stuka appears to hang in the sky
as I make an imaginary dive-bombing run on my target.
Tracking: Once trimmed, the Stuka ew hands off from horizon to horizon. Be sure
to use a touch of rudder, coordinated with the ailerons, to make your turns look
better.
Aerobatics: The Stuka will perform basic aerobatics. Low high-speed passes look
very realistic and the Magnum 1.20 4-stroke sounds great.
Glide and Stall Performance: The Stuka glides very well, despite the amount of
drag on it. The Stuka will quickly fall off on a wing if too much forward speed is lost.
However, the Stuka is easy to recover from the stall as long as there is adequate
altitude.
PILOT DEBRIEFING
The BH Models Stukas overall ight characteristics are outstanding. It would make
an excellent Sunday yer and be a great introduction to warbirds for the intermediate
yer. I am very pleased with the Stuka and look forward to many more bombing
missions with it.

Screaming Death
from Above
The Ju-87B Stuka (Sturzkampfugzeug,
or dive-bomber) epitomized the
technological terror of the Blitzkrieg
early in World War II. As an added
psychological weapon, crews attached
sirens called the Trumpets of Jericho
to the landing gear fairings. The sirens
would make a high-pitched screaming
noise as the Stuka dove down at 324mph
to destroy its target. An automatic
bombing system was developed, to aid
the pilot in the bombing run. The pilot
would set his chosen altitude for bomb
release/pull-out, normally 900 meters.
Then, when he opened the dive brakes,
the automatic system adjusted the
elevator trim tabs and started the dive.
The pilot manually ne-tuned the dive
angle (often 90 degrees!) by reference
to his visual horizon. At bomb release,
the automatic controls would once
again adjust the elevator trim tabs and
the Stuka would pull out of the dive and
level out at approximately 450 meters.
This automatic system was a lifesaver
to the Stukas crew as they would briey
blackout during the pullout due to the
high G-Force imposed on them. The
Ju-87 was rst produced in 1937 and
production ended at the end of World
War II. There were an estimated 6,500 Ju
87s of all versions built between 1936 and
August 1944.
The scale split aps not only add realism, but they are also
functional.
It would be very easy to make this a working scale drop tank.

portside needed to be trimmed to clear the
mufer. To ensure a smooth reliable idle, I
installed a Ram on-board igniter to re the
Magnum 4-strokes glow plug. I installed
the Rams indicator light on the rewall.
From the front of the Stuka, the light is
easy to see when you look through the air
intake hole in the top of the cowl. A qual-
ity two-piece aluminum and plastic spin-
ner nish off the front of the Stuka. Each
individual aileron and ap control surface
is operated by a servo under a hatch in the
wing. The Stukas wings are fastened to
the fuselage by an aluminum spar and two
plastic wing bolts. The Stukas main land-
ing gear is functional oleo struts that are
housed in a plastic molded fairing. The
steerable tailwheel is a well-made spring
suspension piece that is connected to
the rudder by a control rod. There are 14

BH MODELS JU-87B B STUKA ARF 120FS/EP
The Stukas cowl was carefully trimmed to clear the Magnum
120 4-strokes mufer. Also, the Magnums mufer was covered
in black automotive header paint.

painted formed plastic pieces to trim and
attach to the Stuka. All the parts are of good
quality, t well, and really make the Stuka
stand out from all the other manufacturers
ARFs. All of the hardware included in the
kit is metric and of very good quality and
except for the wing servo hatches and the
servo trays, everything is predrilled, cut out
and aligned for you. Wherever a screw or
bolt has to be placed is already drilled and
the covering cut away where needed.
CONCLUSION
The Ju-87B Stuka was an absolute pleasure
to assemble and y. In less than 10 hours,
I had an masterpiece that I could not wait
to y. At the eld, I was ready to y the
Stuka in under 10 minutes. The hatch in
the bottom of the Stuka allows complete
and easy access to the models wing bolts
and aileron/ap extensions. The Stuka is an
eye catcher and draws many positive com-
ments. This plane is also very easy to track
in the sky. Once again, BH Model has pro-
duced a beautiful, quality airplane that Im
proud to own. The Stuka is truly an excel-
lent value for any warbird enthusiast.

TEXT AND PHOTOS BY GERRY YARRISH Y
THE GREAT THING ABOUT almost-ready-to-
y airplanes is that most come with great-
looking berglass engine cowls that t
perfectly and often arrive from the factory
already painted. Almost all of these cowls
are held in place with screws, which makes
assembly quick and simple. As you build
up ight time however, engine vibration
and everyday knocks and dings take their
toll and that once shiny new engine cowl
will start to show its age. Of course, if one is
available, you could simply replace it with
a new one, but that will cost at least 20
bucks, not including shipping. A great way
to save that cash and apply it to something
you really need (like a gallon of fuel or a
new servo), is to repair your
old cowl yourself. Heres how
I did it for my Hangar 9 Piper
Pawnee crop-duster ARF.
Here are some of the basic
tools and materials youll
need to x a cracked and
worn-out engine cowl. Youll
need berglass cloth, Z-poxy
Finishing resin, mixing
cups and mixing sticks, mask-
ing tape, sandpaper, and a
Dremel Moto-Tool with some
Robart medium or coarse grit
grinding bits. Youll also need
some tack cloths, a bottle of spray cleaner,
acetone or MEK solvent, denatured or
rubbing alcohol and some paper towels. I
would also advise a clean place to work and
that it helps to place some old newspaper
or brown wrapping paper to protect your
work surface.
Acetone and MEK
solvent can be used
to really clean the
cowl. See text for
other supplies youll
need.

1
Start by carefully removing the old
engine cowl from your airplane. If
some cracked or broken cowl parts fall
away, be sure to save them. Set the rest
of the model aside so you dont get any
epoxy resin or paint on your model or the
engine.
3
For some damage that happens from
vibration and metal parts rubbing
against the berglass (such as mufers),
the best way to repair and prevent the
damage from spreading is to simply use
a grinding bit or cutoff wheel and enlarge
the opening by removing the damaged
portion. You can see this damage easily
with its fractured gel coat and black
grease deeply embedded in the edges of
the berglass.
4
After you degrease the area, use
a ne-tip felt pen and mark the
material youll remove. Slowly grind away
the material up to the pen mark and then
use some 220-grit sandpaper and smooth
the edges of the opening so there are no
more sharp edges to encourage further
cracking. You can leave the edges as is,
or you can lightly spray with a primer and
then shoot a coat of matching color paint
to seal the edges. This will help minimize
future grime and oil from embedding
itself into the berglass.
2
Thoroughly clean the engine cowl
using some spray cleaner inside and
out. To really degrease the surface of a
very old and greasy berglass cowl, use
Acetone or MEK solvent. Use a paper
towel and wipe the cowl down, then go
over it again with the solvent to really get
the oil and grime removed. If you dont
start with a squeaky-clean surface, your
repair wont adhere properly.
Inspect the cowl and identify any cracks
and damage you want to x. The rst
thing you should do whenever you nd a
crack is to stop-drill it to prevent it from
spreading. Cracks are formed by stress
and stress in a material always looks
for the path of least resistance. Sharp
corners and jagged holes and cutouts in
cowls are where they pop up. When there
is a sharp angle in an edge, it causes a
stress riser that concentrates the forces
until a crack forms. When you drill a hole
at the end of a crack, you slow down its
progression by spreading out the area the
stress is acting on. So, whenever you see
a crack, repair it as soon as possible so it
wont spread.
5
For holes that have cracked out to an
edge, like where there attachment
screws hold the cowl, you should use a
cutoff wheel and lightly remove the very
edges of the crack to expose new, clean
material. On the inside surface, use a
grinding wheel to remove a thin portion of
the berglass and then go over the area
with some 220-grit sandpaper to expose
clean material to which the repair can
stick.
6
On the outer surface of the cowl,
mask the repair area off with tape so
you can protect the undamaged nish.
Use 220-grit sandpaper and go over the
repair area and expose fresh gel coat and
berglass. Wipe the inside and outside
of the repair area with a tack cloth to
get all the ground-up berglass powder
removed.
7
Take some berglass cloth, roll it up
and then with a sharp pair of scissors
cut it into shreds. Do this over some
paper to catch the material and cut the
cloth over and over again until you end up
with very ne shards of berglass. This
will be used as a thickening material and
will be mixed into the epoxy resin.

10
Apply a small glob of resin/ller
mixture on the outside of the cowl
repair area. Make sure to get the mixture
to ow into the hole and crack. Keep the
amount of ller on the outside surface
to a minimum. Now, turn the cowl over
and place it on top of one of the backing
strips. Use a weight to hold the cowl
down snugly over the backing strip and
apply more ller material over the inner
repair area.
13
Cut three or four patches of
medium-weight woven cloth into
square patches. They should be an inch
all around larger than the repair area.
Mix up some more resin and apply the
patches over the repair. Apply the patch
material to both the inside and outside
of the engine cowl, cover both sides with
the release plastic and squeegee out the
resin to make a smooth ow of resin. Set
aside to set up.
14
When the resin has cured, remove
the release sheet and trim the
repair material ush with the edge of the
cowling. While the repair material is not
fully set up it, can be cut easily with a
sharp hobby knife. Cut away the access
material and then let it cure fully before
you sand the surface and edge smooth
with sandpaper.
11
Place the second backing strip over
the repair and press down rmly to
spread the mixture out. Place the weight
on top of the strip and set aside until
the repair mixture has set. (Depending
on your brand of resin, it should take 30
minutes to one hour.)
15
Now to make the repair literally
disappear, sand the resin and
feather it out to the surrounding surface.
Use some model ller to ll any pinholes
or defects and sand smooth. Mask off
the cowl again and hit with a couple of
light coats of sandable primer and let
dry. Repeat the process until the surface
is smooth and defect-free. Spray the
area with a couple light coats of paint to
match the engine cowls color. Let dry.
16
Reinstall the engine cowl on the
model and mark the location for
the attachment hole. Remove from the
model, drill a pilot hole and then slowly
enlarge the hole by using larger and
larger drill bits until it is the proper size.
Lightly sand the hole to smooth the edges
and if you like, add a light clear coat to
add an additional layer of protection.
I hope this how-to technique helps
you to enjoy the hobby a little more while
saving a little coinand who doesnt
want to do that? So, what are you waiting
for? Go and take out your newly repaired
airplane and do some ying!
12
Heres what the repair looks
like after the backing strips are
removedbut youre not done yet!
8
Place the berglass shards in a
mixing cut and slowly add the
nishing resin till you have a 50/50
mixture of resin (both parts A & B) and
the ller material. Use a mixing stick
and really combine the mixture until it is
slightly stiff and strings when you lift
the stick from the mixture.
9
To make the repair really smooth,
make two backer sheets from balsa
wrapped with some MonoKote clear
backing, or Great Planes Plans Protector
sheeting. Use some tape to hold it in
place around the balsa sheets.

4D Graphics: aerofy 5s world is virtual and innovative
in every way, including high-resolution 4D sceneries
with animated environments. Flying has never been
more exciting than with aerofy 5.
New Virtual Elements Technlology: Adjustable
cloud formations, thermals, turbulences, moving
water surfaces, trees, leaves, windmills, and much,
much more
Helicopter precision Contest: Hovering your
helicopter is one thing, but fying along a certain
path is a real challenge. This contest will help you to
improve your exact helicopter fying in an optimal
way.
Pylon Race: Enjoy racing at top speed around the
pylons taking the shortest possible fight pathjust
like the full-scale racers your airplanes turn points are
displayed.
Screenshots are taken utilizing the 4D graphics, so
they are virtually identical to that of the original. Now,
you too can generate high-resolution full-color fight
photos.
Limbo Contest: This task will challenge the fying skill
of every pilot. Your airplane must pass under limbo
poles, which can be set a diferent heights.
Autorotation for Helicopters (left picture) / Torque
training for Fixed-wing aircraft (right picture): This
cleverly devised program guides the RC pilot in
step-by-step fashion from beginner to expert.
Hand-Launch/Slope Soaring: Just hand-launch your
glider as you would in real life. Then enjoy some
dynamic soaring or search for thermals. You can even
launch your glider with a winch at the airfeld.
Multi-Player Mode: Using the Internet or a network
you can fy with up to 8 pilots. Chat with the other
pilots simultaneously, or talk with them via
Skypeall at no charge.
Mode Selection: You can select the desired mode,
and calibrate the transmitter in a matter of seconds.
Quick Selection Menu: Ofers the easiest operation
imaginable. View the most important functions at a
glance and select with just a click of the mouse.
Landing Trainer: Flying is Landing is a well-known
pilots slogan. Practice and learn how to perform a
perfect down-wind and base leg turn, and fnal
approach, with continuous descentwithout stalling
your airplane.
Landing Contest: Practice spot landings under contest
conditions. The closer the airplane lands to the landing
line the more points the pilot will get. This is a perfect tool
for learning the correct landing approach.
Weather Center: Virtually any weather condition can
be set according to the pilots preferences, no matter
the cloud formations, time of the day, wind speed,
direction, terrain, etc.
Recording Center: Produce fight videos of your
airplanes. Record your fight in high resolution with
just a click on the hard drive of your computer. This
feature allows you to analyze and improve your
piloting abilities for free style and pattern fying.
Your PC as your Flight Instructor: As needed, all
control functions can be executed by the pilot or by
the computerand is continuously adjustable!

95-page instruction manual recommends
that this plane is intended for intermedi-
ate to advanced pilots.
UNIQUE FEATURES
The Cessna 195 ARF QBs long list of
unique features sets this model apart from
the run-of-the-mill ARF. To begin, all con-
trol surfaces are covered in a hard corru-
gated plastic that simulates the look of
the full-size aircraft control surfaces. Flaps
and the ailerons are fully installed to the
wing halves. The same scale detail is on
FLIGHTTEST
The Cessna 195 can be own from a large grass eld but is more at home on a
paved runway. The plane takes off easily at
1
1
2 throttle and tracks straight with very
little rudder input. Landing with full aps is slow and predictable, with no tendency
to tip-stall. Keeping the throttle a little above idle provides excellent control. If youre
taxiing on a rough surface, be sure to use a little up-elevator to prevent a nose-over.
Keeping the rudder on low rates will also prevent over-correcting during taxi.
GENERAL FLIGHT PERFORMANCE
Stability: When in the air, the Cessna 195 goes where you point it. The wing has very
little dihedral built in, so the plane does not right itself like a trainer.
Tracking: It tracks straight without any noticeable tendency to wander. It will
maintain the course until input is applied to the sticks for a course change.
Aerobatics: The Cessna 195 is capable of loops, rolls, stall turns and inverted ight,
but because of its scale appearance, it just doesnt look like its supposed to be
doing them. The Cessna requires rudder coordination to make turns efciently.
Glide and stall performance: Stalls are mild and straight ahead. The recommended
half-ap setting slows the plane considerably without adversely affecting the ight
characteristics. Low and slow y-bys are a cinch with this plane!
PILOT DEBRIEFING
After reading a few ight reviews on the full-size Cessna 195, its easy to say that
the Aeroworks version ies better than the real thing. This makes the AeroWorks
Cessna 195 a great choice for a rst- or second-time scale pilot endeavor. But just
because it doesnt y like the full-size plane does not mean you cant y it in a scale-
like manner; you can, and it is easy to do. More experienced aerobatic pilots should
not bother with the low rates except on the rudder while taxiing. Less experienced
pilots (stick yankers) will appreciate the low rates because the slower response
times make ight maneuvers look more scale, smoothing out over-control. The only
recommendation I suggest for the Cessna 195 is the addition of at least 20% aileron
rudder mixing.

the tail surfaces are neatly hidden in the tail

the Cessna are high-quality ball links and

Another interesting feature is the LED

There is no guesswork to mounting any of

FEBRUARY 2011 69
Details, details, details
I mentioned earlier that this meet was not a contest but a fun,
get-together meet. After looking at nearly all the models on hand,
there was no doubt in my mind that a lot of them could easily
compete in the best of scale contests. Some examples of some
beautifully built and detailed models were the L-19 Bird Dog
built and own by Scott Davis. The surface detail was crisp and
well executed and the big machine was tted with all the correct
equipment of the L-19/O-1s used in Southeast Asia during the
1960s and 1970s. Willy Pete rocket canisters slung under the
wings along with canvas-covered survival bags completed the
warbird avor. At the other end of the type spectrum was the
A-10A brought by Egil Wigert. Built from the Slovenian Mibo kit,
this all-composite, twin-turbined jet featured a fully detailed cockpit
with a scale pilot gure whose head turned, very realistic gear
struts and all the appropriate markings.
Another one that caught my eye was the AC-47 gunship that
was complete with mini gun and loudspeaker installation on the
L.H. side, clearly visible through the windows and open cargo door.

The cockpit of the A-10A from the Slovenian MIBO kit, built
by Egil Wigert. The level of detail is amazing and might be
considered ARI(Almost Ready for Installation), as most
components are premolded.
One of the eet of models brought by Evan Quiros, and my
favorite, the Dornier Do-335 Pfeil. Built from the German Engel
kit, this entry took Critics Choice, Flight, Pilots Choice and Best
Cockpit awardsand deserved them all!
The Accessory Package and Willy Pete rockets under the
wings of Scott Davis L-19 Bird Dog sure add to the realism.
Surface detailing was equally well done.
Witchcraft B-24 by Cal Branton took the Critics Choice, Static
award. Very nice surface detail, as evidenced in this photo.

incident damaged the right wing, which
Merlyn probably has already repaired!
ALL PA PP RT OF THE SHOW!
Two additional visual highlights of the
event were the noontime show in which
combat reenactments took place; separate
activities for WW I and WW II models com-
plete with strang runs, ak explosions,
and bomb bursts. All this wall-to-wall
activity was enhanced by the inclusion of
some amazing pyrotechnics skillfully cho-
reographed by a team of experts. Tim John-
son ew his B-29 Enola Gay to a comfort y -
able altitude and as he passed over head,
a gasoline bomb went off at show center
creating a huge explosion and a mush-
room cloud, the heat of which could easily
be felt from my location directly across the
runway. Amazing and effective show!
If that wasnt enough, full-size partici-
pation in the form of a T-28, P-51, T-33,
Fokker D-7 replica, and a ight of RV-4s and
RV-6s was obviously one of the highlights
for many of those on hand. On the ight
home while assembling my notes, I realized
just how seamless the activities at this event
were. Lots of planned activity and enter-
tainment, y as much as you wanted, ven-
dors to visit (and buy spare parts), an auc-
tion with some incredible bargains, great
food, wonderful fellowship; you couldnt
help but want to go back. Im ready!
Warbirds Over the Rockies Caught at the instant of bomb release, Eduardo Estaves P-47. Miss
Plaineld markings duplicate those of Col. Steve Pisanos, WW II ace

just one of the amazingly choreographed explosions used during the
halftime display. The dedicated pyrotechnics group did a masterful job!

location and makes for a smaller shipping

Models did a good job of packing the
box as everything is framed in place and
bagged. In addition, the bags are num-
bered and correspond to specic build
steps in the manual; this welcome addi-

Your aileron servos are quick to install.
Wood blocks adhere to concealment
hatches, and a preinstalled string allows
you to pull extension wiring through with-
out headaches. Screw the hatches to the
wing and connect the simple adjustable
clevis-type of linkages. The wing halves are
supported with a wood-lled aluminum
FLIGHTTEST
This plane could probably take off from almost any decent surface. As tested, there
is plenty of prop clearance, and the wheels can easily traverse 1- to 2-inch grass.
The Magnum .70 may be a little on the overkill end of the power spectrum, but it sure
makes the Paulistinha tons of fun to y! Takeoffs are uneventful; line up, power up,
and the plane will just about levitate up in a few short feet. My landings are typically
more interesting, but landing this model makes everyone look good because the
plane is so forgiving. On your approach, youll just maintain some speed until you
break into ground effect, cut to idle, and lead the P-56 back to the tarmac feeding in
a slight bit of elevator. Taxiing the Paulistinha is a piece of cake; the tailwheel does a
great job driving the plane around.
GENERAL FLIGHT PERFORMANCE
Stability: On the ground and in the air, the airplane is solid and feels comfortable.
Newer pilots will appreciate this.
Tracking: Once trimmed for straight and level ight at cruise, I did notice a slight
tendency for the plane to pitch up slightly at full throttle; but this is to be expected
from a high-wing trainer type of aircraft.
Aerobatics: More than meets the eye! Loops (no matter how large), faster than
expected rolls, and all combinations pose no challenge. Spins, snaps, inverted ight
and tumbles are starting to fall out of scale ight but are too cool. Then we go to
the other side: knife-edge ight is awesome and torque rolling the P-56 makes me
happy. I also did some rolling circles and point rolls for fun.
Glide and stall performance: I added a bit of weight with my setup, however the
models glide is still smooth and predictable. As long as the wing stays ying and
the nose is just under level, it will just oat along. Stalls will break straight ahead and
adding power will have the plane ying again immediately.
PILOT DEBRIEFING
Set up with low rates, the P-56 is docile and can be used to teach aspiring pilots
the in and outs of ying RC. As the pilot progresses, the model can be congured to
perform with more agility, thereby giving one an opportunity to learn aerobatics. For
the experienced pilot, the P-56 is a nice change and will surprise those at the eld
when you do a 50-grit knife-edge pass or tail touch during a hover!

FLIGHT TECHNIQUE:
Frankly, anyone can spin an
airplane by throwing the sticks into
the corners until the ground forces
him to recover. At the advanced
level however, an upright spin is
an intentional altitude reduction
maneuver in which the pilot
idles the engine and holds
the plane straight and level
until it stalls. He then
performs a determined
number of spins,
stopping precisely on the
heading that he intended
to set up for the next
maneuver. Consequently, the
pilot performing intentional spins
enjoys a level of satisfaction well
beyond the typical stick thrower. A
spins rotation is similar to a snap
roll, yet what distinguishes it as
a spin is that the rotation is not
initiated until there is a clear stall
break (nose drop) from level ight
with the engine at idle.

GETTING STARTED
Setting up a spin starts with idling the
engine. The pilot then concentrates on
maintaining a constant altitude with ele-
vator. The wings are kept level with tiny
aileron inputs, and rudder is used to keep
tracking straight. The increasing amount
of elevator required to hold altitude at idle
will eventually put the airplane into a stall.
At the moment the nose breaks (drops),
the spin is initiated with the pilot simul-
taneously applying full up-elevator (if its
not there already) and full rudder and aile-
ron in the same direction. Its worth noting
that because the engine forces tend to be
minimal at idle, most planes spin equally
well left or right. If the airplane has a pro-
portionally large propeller and a fast idle,
the plane will tend to spin better to the left
with engine torque and propwash. That
said, most of the time its preferable to ini-
tiate the spin inputs into the wind, which
results in a more compact and distinct spin
entry; a downwind spin entry tends to
appear more like a spiral.
RECOVERING FROM A SPIN
To stop spinning, simply neutralize the
controls. Note that the slower nature of
spins means less air over the wings and
control surfaces, and so the spin will tend
to consistently stop the spin on a precise
heading. Note that a two-turn spin is used
here to afford more time to develop good
spin timing.
Setup. Experience will teach roughly when
to idle the engine relative to where you
want the spin to occur; however, when dif-
ferent winds and airplanes are introduced
into the equation, deciding when to idle to
set up a spin is often just a guess. A more
sure method is to reduce the power to near
idle well short of the point that you want
the spin to occur, approach that point on
the edge of stall, and just short of that
point fully idle the engine, thus achieving
a stall moments later.
Stall break and spin. An advanced pilot
does not arbitrarily decide what direction
to spin at the moment the plane breaks,
but sneaks in a little rudder pressure in
the direction in which he wants to spin as
he senses the airplane is about to stall. He
doesnt input enough rudder to be visible,
but just a little something to help ensure
that the plane breaks in the direction of his
choosing.
Recovery. The best way to consistently
stop spinning on a precise heading is to use
mental cues to keep track of the spins rev-
olutions. Its important to dene a timing
base around which you can neutralize the

SPIN RECOVERY

lower the nose and build

to continuing rotating a bit after the con-
trols have been neutralized. Therefore, you
have to neutralize the controls, on average,
a quarter turn before you actually want the
plane to stop.
After the spin has stopped, the nose
should be lowered to gain additional
airspeed, then smoothly pull out while
adding power. Be very careful not to jerk
the elevator; you will likely tip-stall the air-
plane and enter an inadvertent secondary
spin with additional altitude loss.
BREAKING IT DOWN
The four main spin phases are setup; stall
break and spin; recovery (stopping the
spin); and the nish. There are particular
points to make about each phase that will
improve performance appreciably. In par-
ticular, its important to gauge the timing

denite spin axis. If taking out the in-
spin aileron causes the plane to stop spin-
ning, you will have to determine at what
point the spin stops and not switch the
aileron beyond that.
Next, the throttle is advanced to create
the gyroscopic procession force that will
pitch the nose up farther while spinning.
The more power you use, the atter the
fuselage angle will usually become. Yet, if
at a certain point the airplane starts the
spiral out of the spin, instead of atten-
ing, that is the limit to how far you can
advance the power in a at spin with that
airplane setup.
The deeply stalled at spin will always
take longer to stop rotating after you neu-
tralize the controls. Always idle the engine
and apply full opposite rudder as part of
the recovery to stop the spin in a reason-
able time frame from when the recovery
was initiated.
CONCLUSION
There will always be pilots who try to
impress by throwing the sticks into the cor-
ners until altitude forces them to recover,
but they dont come close to knowing the
satisfaction of a job well done that comes
from performing spins properly. Enjoy!

After one revolution, the in-spin aileron
is smoothly switched over to out-spin

greater drag of the down aileron on the
inside of the spin will then also have the
effect of applying additional rudder, and
this will cause the spin to display a more

point each time.
For example, if duri iing a two-turn spin
the pilot thinks one at one revolution
and then neutralizes th and then neutralizes th hhe controls on two
as the plane completesss the second revolu-
tion, his airplane tends to rotate a quarter
turn farther after the controls have been
neutralized and he enddds up doing two and
a quarter turns. But if he counts one at
one revolution and thhhen neutralizes the
controls just as hes abbbout to think two,
the plane will come to a stop on two.
Finish. Pushing to a pe eerfect vertical down-
line immediately afterrr stopping a spin is
truly the most distinguuuishing and dynamic
feature of the spin at the advanced level.
Note that it is not neeecessary to hold the
downline very long, juuust having a down-
line at all creates a sennnsational spin nish
(in addition to buildinnng up speed for the
next maneuver).
FLAT SPINS
A regular upright left spin can be transi-
tioned into a at spinnn by applying out-
spin right aileron (ooopposite the spins
rotation) to atten the wings, while adding h l dd
power to induce gyroscopic procession to scopic procession to
raise the nose while spinning. While a at
spin would not be used in precision ying
because it is much harder to stop precisely,
it does expand the scope of spins available
for the advanced pilot to perform.
Due to the gyroscopic procession of
the spinning propeller, upright spins can

Mastering Upright Spins
A Different
Perspective On Spins
Contributor Dave Scott is the
founder of the 1st U.S. R/C Flight
School and has professionally
trained more than 1,300 pilots. He
also ies full-scale planes and puts
on airshows at events across the
country. Whats it like to spin in a
full-size plane? Dave responds:
U
pright spins are similar to model
aircraft with the exception of
the fact that we use our feet to
control rudder and a full-scale airplane
requires full opposite rudder to stop the
spin. Also, if a pilot tries to recover an
upright spin and pushes the stick too far
forward, he can transition into an inverted
spin, which is very disorientating. That is
why aerobatic pilots practice the Beggs
emergency spin recovery of pulling the
throttle back to idle, letting go of the stick,
and applying full opposite rudder.
The killer in full-scale aerobatics occurs
when the pilot becomes disorientated
and starts making improper control inputs
that ultimately aggravate or prolong
the spin. Adding, reducing, or applying
opposite aileron, neutralizing or pushing
the elevator forward all change the
characteristics of the spin. For example,
pushing the stick forward accelerates an
upright spin, but only pulling the power
and applying full opposite rudder stops a
well-developed spin.
As I just learned practicing every
type of spin this past week, you can
read and be told how to perform and
recover from different types of spins, but
it takes several attempts to acclimate
ones self to the experience before he
starts committing to using the correct
techniques. Visually, inverted spins are far
more confusing from the pilots viewpoint
and take more getting used to; rudder is
opposite, for example. Inverted spins are
also faster because the rudder is more
effective. It also helps to have your belts
super tight when hanging upside down.
It took a couple of days of intense
training, but Im no longer uncomfortable
spinning in any attitude and I know that
if I found myself disorientated during
an inadvertent spin, I can recover with
minimal altitude loss. A lot of people
avoid spin training because of the initial
discomfort, but if their airplane ever
departs controlled ight unexpectedly,
odds are theyll end up improperly trying
to recover with the stick if they havent
experienced those sensations in a
controlled training situation.

Six Spark Plug Tips
Modelers often overtighten their spark plugs, and this can cause the
threads in the cylinder to strip out if care is not taken. Here are some
guidelines.
Q Gasket seat: tighten the plug an additional

Q Tighten seat: often referred to as gasket-less plugs, these need to be tightened an

16 turn after they are nger tight.
Q Before you install any spark plug, compare the old and new plugs to make sure
that the replacement has the same thread diameter, pitch, thread length and seat
conguration as the original plug.
Q Let the engine cool before you attempt to loosen and remove the plugs. This will
reduce the risk of damaging the threads in the cylinder head.
Q Always inspect the old plugs after they have been removed, and note the
condition of the fuel mix that would indicate whether the engine runs rich or lean.
Q Inspect the plug lead and cap and replace them if the insulation is damaged.
case makes it easy to inspect and maintain
the gearbox components.
For maximum power and performance, I
used the BH Hanson 3D Max engine capa-
ble of nearly 5 horsepower, coupled with a
Hatori gas mufer. Since helis often operate
near the ground and are prone to ingesting
dirt and dust, I recommend a high-quality
and efcient air lter such as the Miniature
Aircraft Air Filter, which I got from New
England Heli (newenglandheli.com). The
custom painted canopy was painted by my
good friend Jimmy Ferriola.
CONCLUSION
The Spectra-G was a very pleasant build
with no issues and resulted in a smooth
and great-performing heli. This machine is
more expensive than others on the market,
but you get what you pay for, and it is ide-
ally suited for those who only want the
best with no compromises. Its advanced
engineering and quality construction
result in a super-strong airframe that can
withstand the rigors of 3D ight. Due to
its performance and size, I recommend this
model for pilots with at least intermediate
skills.

FIREWALL FORWARD
Choosing the right engine can sometimes
be tedious, especially when it comes to a
scale aircraft. This column is written with
the giant-scale enthusiast in mind, so be
advised that larger glow fuel engines will
cost more to run. Glow fuel costs more per
gallon than gasoline and the consumption
rate is also greater than with gas engines.
A good way to choose a suitable engine
is to not exceed a weight-to-engine-dis-
placement ratio of 12 pounds (aircraft
weight), per cubic inch (ci) of engine dis-
placement. For example, with an Evolu-
tion 40GX, the displacement is 2.4ci and
my estimate weight for my T-34 is between TT
21 and 23 pounds. So, using 23 pounds,
the ratio would be 9.58 pounds per cubic
inch of engine displacement. Tweaking TT
also wanted to have a little more power for
some non-scale aerobatics in the 35cc-
40cc range. The Evolution 40GX t the bill
nicely.
If you are interested in comparing
engines, I found a website youll nd
useful. While it doesnt have every engine
listed, it does have quite a few. Check out
Chris Brewers Engine Comparison chart at
the engine with prop and mufer choices
should produce adequate power.
The Mentor was originally powered by
a Moki 1.8 engine and it had a custom-
made exhaust. Using the formula above,
this engine produced a ratio of 12.77, just
over the 12-pound maximum. Since it was
for Fun Scale, I wasnt worried about the
engine not being fully concealed and I
This Dremel Oscillating tool is great
for cutting through thick plywood. In
this case, I had to make a few cuts in
my rewall and rewall frame for the
wraparound mufer, and using this tool
made it a breeze.
Here is the rst cut I made into the
rewall frame. As you can see, I have
again marked the rewall frame to make
a second cut for the mufer. Always start
with small cutouts and gradually remove
more and more material as needed.
When it came time to align the engine,
I rst bolted in the bottom half of the
cowling. Then, I needed to position the
engine in place so that I could center the
shaft of the engine with the opening at
the front of the cowling where the shaft
would protrude.

FEBRUARY 2011 107
scaleaero.com/engine_comparisons.htm
When ying scale, performing with
scale-like airspeeds is more important than
having excess power. So, to maximize your
power and ight performance, make sure
your aircraft is as light as possible and keep
its wing loading pilot friendly. Lighter
wing-loadings provide slower ight speeds!
EVOLUTION 40GX INSTALLATION
During the rebuild of my T-34, install-
ing the new engine took the most time
and effort. The plane featured a two-piece
engine cowl that separated into an upper
and lower partquite common for most
giant-scale planes. Since the cylinder head
was going to be exposed, I had to make
a few rough cutouts in the cowl before I
could install the engine. Always make your
cutouts small and dont rush the process.
An excessively large opening will hurt the
appearance of your scale model. Slowly
enlarge the opening until you have a snug
t. To make it easier to center the engine
shaft with the front of the spinner opening
I installed the bottom half of the cowl rst.
This gives plenty of access to the rewall
when placing the new mount bolts.
After the engine is positioned, I marked
the hole locations with a pencil and drilled
1
/8-inch pilot holes in each of the four
spots. I then used wood screws to tem-
porarily fasten the engine in place and
ensure that it was properly centered. After
this process was completed, I removed the
engine, redrill the four mounting holes to
accept 8-32 blind-and glued the blind-nuts
in place on the inside of the rewall.
FITTING THE MUFFLER
I wanted to keep the exhaust as simple as
possible so I used the Evolution inverted
wraparound mufer. Since its best used
with aerobatic models that incorporate
a motor mount box, the installation in
a scale plane was quite tedious. I had to
remove a good portion (roughly 15-20%)
of the rewall to make room for the
exhaust system. To restore strength, I rein-
forced the back of the rewall with epoxy,
milled berglass and carbon ber.
Again, while removing portions of
the rewall, I went slowly and removed
one piece at a time. This ensured a neat
t with a minimum of rewall being cut
away. I also made a small hatch cover on
the right side of the fuselage to cover most
of the mufer. The opening also made the
installation easier. Had I not made the
opening I wouldve needed to remove a
larger portion of the rewall to t the muf-
er so it would t into place from the front.
TRIMMING THE COWLING
Measure twice and cut in small incre-
ments. Cowl openings are required for
the mufer, carburetor, and engine head.
Cut and t and cut and t again. If the
engine makes contact with the cowl, use
a small Dremel grinding wheel and a cir-
cular sanding block to make your cutouts
clean and smooth. Mark the cowl with a
pencil from the inside remove the material
and test the t the cowling until it can be
properly secured in place. This process can
take hours to perform properly. You should
end up with equal spacing (about
1
1
8 inch),
all around the engine, carburetor, and
mufer. In the end, it is worth the effort
because your model will look neater and
much more professional with everything
tting perfectly.
TIP OF THE MONTH:
AN ENGINE
FOR A YAK
Another example is the Desert Aircraft
150cc engine I installed in my 37.5%
Yak 54. Since this plane features a
radial engine cowl, aligning the engine
is rather simple. However, to center
the prop shaft in the cowl opening,
the engine has to be offset because
of the rewalls built-in right thrust.
Move the engine to the left until the
spinners backplate is centered within
the cowling opening.
I use clamps to temporarily hold
the engine in place. Then with the
cowl fastened, I can move the engine
until it is in the proper position. Next,
I mark the attachment bolt hole
locations. Remove the cowl and
engine, drill the holes and reinstall the
engine. Its that simple.
After the engine was positioned and
the mounting hole areas were marked,
I always drill a small pilot hole and use
a wood screw to temporarily fasten the
engine into position. If any change needs
to be done, I can re-drill the rewall so
that the engine is perfectly mounted.
After satised, I re-drill the four locations
with the proper size drill bit that will be
for the Tee Nut that is to be secured on
the back of the rewall. In this case, I
used 8-32 socket head bolts to secure
the engine to the rewall, with 8-32 Tee
Nuts and Lock Nuts as a safety measure.
I have drilled the Evolution radial mount
in four locations. This mount is secured
to both the back of the engine, and also,
to the rewall of the aircraft.
The engine and mufer have been
installed, as has the bottom half of the
cowling. Time and patience pays off!

COWL HALVES
For a neater and stronger installation, I
decided to use four 6-32 bolts and blind
nuts to secure the cowling ring to the fuse-
lage and, six 4-40 bolts and blind nuts to
secure the cowling halves together. I made
a few alignment tabs out of
1
1
8 -inch lite-ply
about 1 -inch high and 1 inch long. All
LETS TALK GIANT SCALE
the tabs were installed in a symmetrical
fashion, and were centered on the cowl-
ing seams. I roughened the area where the
tabs would be glued with 80-grit sandpa-
per, then used Medium ZAP to glue each
tab in place. Once all tabs were secured, I
installed the cowling halves, adjusted the
halves as necessary until I had a perfect t.
I then installed the 4-40 socket head bolts
with blind nuts on the backside of each
mounting tab. Neat and simple.
Tightening the two 4-40 bolts with their
corresponding washers in place.
Here is a shot of one of the mounting tabs.
I have secured the tab to the top half of
the cowling and have secured a 4-40 bolt
and Tee Nut in place. For extra assurance,
a second Tee Nut and bolt will be secured
on the top portion of the cowling to
ensure the tab will not break loose.
Both halves of the cowling have been
properly secured and the airplane looks
beautiful!
PARTING SHOT
Whenever you install an engine, exhaust
system and engine cowl, be sure you pick
the proper engine and exhaust system to
do the job. Then take the time to make
the installations as neatly as you can. Keep
your plane as light and as strong as pos-
sible. After all, your models lifespan is
directly affected on how well you built it
and how well you y it.

PRODUCTREVIEW
Inside Information
We were lucky enough to have the chance
to pose questions to Steve Kaluf, assistant
marketing manager at Futaba, USA. Steve
has been working with the S. Bus system
since it was rst introduced and heres what
he had to say about it
What prompted the design for the S.Bus
system?
One of the main purposes of the S.Bus system
is to simplify the wiring on large models. These
models would normally have leads running from each servo back to the receiver or
have to use Y connectors. S.Bus allows for a single 3-wire cable to be run through
the aircraft with each servo simply branching off from the main cable.
What is the advantage of programming the servo rather than doing it through
the transmitter?
Programming the servo allows you to adjust some parameters that not all
transmitters allow you to do. Neutral position, servo direction, speed, dead band,
travel, servo type (normal or retract), stop mode, boost, damper and other factors
may all be programmed on an S.Bus servo. This is especially useful when matching
multiple servos on a single surface. The servos are easily matched out with the free
PC-Link software used to program the servos.
What do you see as the best feature of this system?
For this answer I went straight to the designer of the system at the Futaba factory:
Wiring is no longer confused as the servo knows what channel to respond to no
matter where it is plugged into the system. t provides a huge reduction in the
required number of wires; this mean less weight, and fewer points of possible failure.

122 MORE FROM THIS ISSUE AT MODELAIRPLANENEWS.COM
FINALAPPROACH
BY G Y ERRY RR YARRISH
At the 2010 NEAT Fair in Downsville, NY,
we saw a lot of great-looking scale electric-
powered aircraft. There was an amazing
number of WW I airplanes and in particu-
lar, one unusual RC plane that caught our
eye. RC model designer extraordinaire Rob
Caso brought his beautifully built British
de Havilland (Airco) DH-2 pusher biplane
to the event and heres what we learned.
Tell us a little about the DH-2 and why
you decided to build this particular
aircraft.
What about its construction and nish?
Though it looks rather fragile, I used
modern materials to build it. For instance,
the booms are carbon-ber tubes with
carbon rods for vertical braces laminated
in balsa. The tail surfaces use laminated
balsa outlines and the control surfaces are
all pulley and cable pull-pull controlled
using Futaba 3114 servos connected to
external (scale) tiller arms. I also formed
the berglass parts for the nose cone and
the upper fuselage nacelle.
The wings have a scale under-cam-
bered airfoil and the landing gear is shock
absorbing. The tail-skid is also spring
loaded for smooth ground handling. I have
a laser cutter and designed the airframe
with lock-tab construction for strength
and easy alignment. I used more plywood
parts than balsa as plywood seems to hold
up better and really ts together better
than balsa does. All the details are hand-
made and I think the little details like the
auxiliary fuel tank on the top of the wing,
the machine gun, ammunition contain-
ers and the internal cockpit details really
bring the model to life. For paint I simply
used Krylon and Tamiya modeling paint.
This particular model is nished in British
ying Ace Lanoe Hawkers colors.
What are you using for power?
The DH-2 is powered by a Hacker A20
30M brushless motor powered by a FMA
2100mAh 3S LiPo pack. Im using an
18-amp speed control and so far, every-
thing is working out great. I am also plan-
ning to make a scale rotary engine that
will both hide the electric motor and spin
along with the prop. The rest of the model
is so nicely detailed, I just have to cover
up the Hacker motor, so why not go to
the extra effort and make it look authentic
and have it spin? Ill let you know how it
turns out!

scale and I designed it with CAD. It has a
40-inch wingspan, is 36 inches long and
weighs 34 ounces ready to y. With a wing
area of 510 square inches, this gives me a
wing loading of only 9.8 ounces per square
foot so its a fair weather, calm wind yer.

Rob made the top of the fuselage nacelle out of formed
berglass.
All the little details bring the DH-2 to life.

SOMETIMES THERE IS SIMPLY NO SUBSTITUTE FOR SPEED. The new Hangar 9
Jackal 50 ARF will satisfy your need for speed just like a jet would, but without the
complexity or cost of one. Its sleek, swept-wing design makes it possible to achieve
scorching speeds using nothing more than the economical Evolution
.60NX engine
and a high-performance tuned muffler. It also gives you the option of pushing the speed
envelope even further by adding mechanical or pneumatic retracts.
Assembling the Jackal is as simple as any other Hangar 9 sport plane. Its low parts
count and innovative assembly features, like the bolt-on horizontal stab and elevatorr
servo tray, make it possible to have yours flying in a few evenings. Even the optional l
flaps are cut and hinged for you. Just drop in a servo and hook them up.
