ENGLISH 121/121G (1-2012) Writing Activity Three Putting Terms in Context For Writing Activity Three, design and

compose a brief writing which builds on your practice with writing summaries and prepares for the shift in the course writing assignments to longer arguments in Essays 2 and 3. Below is a list of terms/concepts taken from the ENGLISH 121/121G course readings and lectures through Week 6. Metonymy (lecture, Park) Text (any of the readings) Intertextuality (lecture, Acker, Bohanan, Fish) Frame (lecture, Hacking, Fish) Point of view (lecture, Bohanan, Fish, Barclay) Denotation/Connotation (lecture, Acker, Fish, Tan) Choose one of the terms or concepts above, and use the term or concept to briefly comment on one of the following readings assigned either for Weeks 1-6 or assigned for later in the semester: Martin Luther King, Letter from Birmingham jail Shakespeare, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun/Mullen, My honeybunches peepers Sanneh, The Rap against Rockism Hughes, Theme for English B Discuss how the term or concept clarifies or adds to the reading. Or, use the term or concept to comment on or respond to a specific passage (paragraph, set of lines, image, narrative episode) from one of the readings. Or, use one of the readings to challenge or rethink the usefulness or explanatory power of the term or concept. For example: To anyone with a general reading knowledge of the canon of English literature (Shakespeare in school English), Mullens poem explicitly invokes Shakespeares sonnet, but HOW? Answer that question by focusing on the specific intertextualities that link the two texts together. What intertextualities are at work as you read the poems together?
