PAINTING TECHNIQUES

PAPER DABBING: Materials required: Crumpled newspaper ball , a shallow tray and medium consistency paint. Method: Crumple newspaper into a ball, big enough for the child to hold in his palm. Dip paper ball into the medium consistency paint and dab on the paper according to the design. The teacher should make a ball to fit her palm for demonstration and 2-3 smaller ones for the children. SPONGE DABBING: Material required: Sponge, a shallow tray, fevicol and medium consistency paint. Method: Take the paint in a tray and mix a little fevicol in it. Dip sponge (palm size) and dab on paper in the design required. Teacher will have a big sponge to fit her palm and the children will use a size, to fit their palms. SPONGE PAINTING: Materials required: Thin paint, a bowl, and a sponge. Method: Dip the sponge in the paint and give the design a wash. This technique is very useful when painting a large area. BALLOON DABBING: Materials required: An inflated balloon, a shallow tray, a little fevicol and medium consistency paint. Method: Blow up the balloon and tie it tight. Mix fevicol in to the colour. Dip balloon in the paint and dab on the paper as required. WOOL DABBING: Materials required: A crumpled ball of paper, a shallow tray, medium consistency paint and some wool or any other thick thread.

2 Method: Tie the wool over the paper ball in a criss-cross pattern. Dip the ball, in paint and dab to get the design required. COTTON DABBING: Materials required: A big ball of cotton, a clothespin (optional), a shallow tray or a bowl and thin paint. Method: Hold the ball of cotton with the clothes clip and dip in paint. Dab on paper according to the design. (Good to make clouds) COTTON PAINTING: Materials Required: A big ball of cotton, a clothes pin, a bowl and thin consistency paint. Method: Hold the cotton with the clothes pin and dip it in paint. Paint on paper to cover the entire area. It will be little uneven. This is also called wash. JUTE DABBING: Materials required: A paper ball big enough to fit in the palm, gunny or jute material to cover the paper ball, a shallow tray and medium consistency paint. Method: Cover the paper ball with the jute material and fasten it with a rubber band. Dip in the paint and dab to get a checked effect. SCRUBBER PAINTING: Materials required: Medium consistency paint, a shallow tray, fevicol, a big size plastic scrubber. Method: Mix a few drops of fevicol in the paint. Dip the scrubber in the paint and then place it on the paper and twist from side to side. (Good to make an orange, a Sun. a snail anything round). BLOCK PRINTING: Materials required: Block, thin sponge, a flat tray, thin paint, and maybe fevicol.. Method: Place a thin sponge in the tray. Pour colour on it and let the sponge soak. Press the block on the sponge evenly and print. (Block could be anything, a wooden block, a lid, a pencil, an eraser, a toilet paper roll, anything at all.)

3 SHAVING BRUSH PAINTING: Materials required: A shaving brush, a bowl and paint of thin consistency. Method: Dip the shaving brush into the paint and paint to get the desired effect. Very good technique to cover a large area. STARCH PAINTING: Materials required: Revive starch powder or dhobis starch, water, a flat tray big enough to fit an A4 size paper and thick paint. Method: Mix some of the starch powder with water to make a thick smooth paste. Put it on the paper and add a few drops of colour. With the palm of your hand, spread the starch-colour mixture all over the paper in a circular motion. There should be no lumps. Let it dry and cut into desired shape. If this technique is being used to make teaching aid, the teacher could spread the starch any way depending on what she is making. COTTON BUD PAINTING: Materials required: Medium consistency paint a flat tray and cotton buds. Method: Dip the tip of the bud in paint and dab according to the design. Do not press. MAGIC PAINTING: Materials required: A white crayon / candle, dark coloured thin consistency paint, a bowl, sponge or paint brush. Method: Draw the design on paper with the white crayon/candle. With sponge or paint brush give a wash over the entire page in one direction. The design will appear as if by magic! DRY CHALK ON WET PAPER: Materials required: Different coloured blackboard chalk, water, and paintbrush or sponge. Method: Make the paper soaking wet with the help of the brush or sponge. While still very wet, use the chalks to make the design. Let it dry. WET CHALK ON DRY PAPER: Materials Required: Different coloured blackboard chalk and a bowl of water. Method: Dip the chalk in to the water and draw/paint on dry paper.

4 FINGER PRINTING: Materials required: A thin sponge, tray or plate and medium consistency paint. Method: Spread the sponge in the tray. Pour paint and let it soak. Press the tip of the index finger in the paint and print as desired. FINGER PAINTING: Materials required: Thin consistency paint in a bowl. Method: Dip the finger in paint and paint. THUMB PRINTING: Materials required: A thin sponge, tray or plate, thin consistency paint. Method: Place the sponge in the tray. Pour the paint over it. Allow it to soak. Press the thumb on the sponge and print on paper to get the thumb print. Decorate as you like. HAND PRINTING: Materials required: A tray, a piece of thin sponge, thin consistency paint. Method: Spread the sponge in the tray and pour paint over it. Let it soak. Press palm on the sponge and press on paper. Decorate as desired. STIPPLING: Material required: Dark coloured crayons, thick paper cut in the shape required. Method: With dark coloured crayon, make an outline on the cutout. The outline should be thick and dark. Place the cutout on the paper and hold firmly with one hand. With the other hand, smudge the outline outward onto the paper, to get the desired shape. CRAYON RUBBING: Materials required: Crayons, any rough textured object like a coin, sandpaper, rough fabric, tree bark etc. Method: Place the object under the paper and hold in place. Rub crayon over it in one direction. The shape of the object will appear. WOOD SHAVING STICKING: Materials required: Wood shavings and fevicol.

5 Method: According to the design, apply fevicol and stick the wood shavings and press firmly. Very good for making nests, roofs etc. SAND STICKING: Materials required: Fevicol, sand, colour (optional). Method: Apply fevicol on the design and sprinkle sand on it. Dust off the extra sand. If desired, sand can be coloured. PAPER TWISTING: Take strips of crepe paper and twist between your palms. PAPER STICKING: Tear paper into bits and stick within the outline of the desired shape. Children should be shown how to tear. PAPER CRUMPLING: Take a piece of crepe paper and roll it between two palms into a ball and press. Use as required.
