SECAF visits Pittsburgh

The 911th Airlift Wing welcomed Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley Thursday, June 7. In a move that was a first for Pittsburgh, Donley visited the Air Force Reserve Base by request of Senator Casey. In his two-hour visit, Donley was given a tour of the base, featuring strategic locations with an emphasis on the 911ths capabilities. He also had the opportunity to meet with local civic leaders, County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, the MACs own co-chairs, Chip Holsworth and Sally Haas, Brad Penrod, Allegheny County Airport AuthorityPittsburgh International Airport, and DeWitt Peart, President, Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, an Allegheny Conference Affiliate. Our base looked absolutely amazing and the Airmen were at their finest, said Sally Haas. It was a tangible reminder of how important the base is when they were able to present Donley with a stack of petitions with over 6,000 signatures. Even though Donley didnt seem inclined to change his mind right then, Haas pointed out that wasnt the expectation. We wanted to show him in person how exceptional the 911th performs, as well as the strong community support behind them. I know hes leaving with a few things to think over. So whats next for the MAC? We are well aware that its going to take an act of Congress to halt the current plan to close the 911th, Haas said. Well be focusing on supporting our Congressional leaders efforts to make sure this legislation passes.
