Definition
Development that mee4ts the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The 2012 Olympics needs to meet the needs to the athletes, local
economies, visitors and environment for the duration of the games and
have use for future generations
Includes social and rented housing provided to certain households (low
income) whose needs are not met by the market (they may not be able to
afford a mortgage.
These would include buildings and materials that do not cause harm to the
environment e.g. they do not contain toxins (paint), have low carbon
footprints (concrete), sustainable wood etc.
A piece of land that has been used and abandoned and is now awaiting a
new use (ready for redevelopment)

Vegetation and
Fauna

Plants and animals (use native species to blend in with the local
environment and provide natural habitats for animals and insects)

Pollution

Pollution - this can include land, air or water pollution it is where


chemicals, noise, dirt or other substances which have harmful effects or are
poisonous to the environment.
A group that has different national or cultural traditions from the majority of
the population.

Ethnic minorities

Derelict

Neglected, run down usually abandoned property can be housing or


industrial.

Connected

Joined through the use of transportation or and communications.

Gridlocked

A complete lack of movement or progress due to the back up of vehicles


this could be the result of the number of vehicles (peak times) or due to the
inadequacies of the road system (narrow old roads).
Growth in areas that have experienced decline in the past hence the
Olympics are regenerating Newham.

Area that is lacking in social and economic necessities such as poor


health and health care services, high unemployment, lack of housing and
educational services.
Multicultural society an area that has a variety of cultural influences and
populations.
To make or process a raw material into a finished product.

An area of land that is crowded or closely compacted

Housing that is let at low rents to low income people, usually provided by

the council or Housing Associations that do not make a profit form the rents

Several storey flats built in high population density areas as they have a
small base footprint.

Working towards a common goal businesses, local residents as well as


the Olympic developers working towards making this a sustainable games.

A not for profit organisation that owns and lets or rents housing to those
who need it (generally the lower income groups)

Travelers

An ethnic group of people who do not have a fixed address and move from
place to place.

Habitat

The area or environment where plants and animals live.

Sustainable concrete that uses low amounts of carbon.

Silicon Valley

Uses natural gas to heat water which is then pumped around buildings in
pipes to provide heating. Excess water is then used to cool water for
appliances such as air conditioning. It is a recyclable system that is
sustainable.
A region in San Francisco built for high-technological companies for the
innovation production of hi-tech products.

Hospitality
Industry

This consists of service based industries such as hotels, restaurants,


conference centers etc.

Flagship

Best or the most important thing produced or owned by an organisation.
