Non – Verbal Communication In Interviews

John Sadler www.nuclearcareersonline.com

When you attend an interview either in person or over a telephone or video link you need to know as
much as possible about how to communicate your message and present yourself. Doing this will help you
make the best impression and win the job.

A study by UCLA showed that communication is :-

• 7% about what you say.

• 38% comes from your voice quality
• 55% is taken from your non-verbal communication.

The means that when you are interviewed you should pay a lot of attention to the way you sound and
how you communicate non-verbally.

There are a number of ways you can make this work for you, by attention to detail and by practising
these skills.

Understanding Nonverbal Communication NVC

• People communicate on a number of levels. Facial expressions, eye contact, posture, hand and
feet movements, body movement and placement, and appearance and passage as you walk towards
an interviewer. When people listen with their eyes, every gesture is communicating something. When
you become accustomed to watching NVC, your ability to read and use it will grow with practice.
• If your words say one thing and your NVC says something different, an interviewer will listen
hard to what is said, because that is the only part they can accept.
• Job candidates are evaluated based on their NVC. A lot can be learned from how you sit in the
lobby, and your NVC during an interview can also inform about your skills, strengths, weaknesses,
and concerns.
• Become sensitive to nonverbal communication during an interview or other situation in which
you need to demonstrate facts and believable statements. Your NVC will reveal more than your
words.
