Narrative Assemblage

Topic Story Telling through Art 3D Mixed Media, Art II (High School) Duration 10, 50-Minute Art Periods Purpose To emulate someone that is close to the student by creating an assemblage out of items that represent this person. These items will be assembled in such a way that they will both tell a story and are aesthetically pleasing. This project teaches the student methods of working with found objects and also about making figurative, rather than literal, connections. Responsibly and safely manage materials and tools. Identify, define problems, and reflect upon possible visual solutions. Create artwork using materials and techniques with skill so that personal intentions are carried out. Critically observe a work of art to evaluate and respond to the artists intent using art vocabulary and terminology. Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of ones artwork. Recognize and understand the relationships between personal experiences and the development of artwork. Observe and describe artwork with respect to history and culture.

Objectives Student will be able to create figurative connections through art. Student will be able to examine a piece of artwork and infer as to its meaning/message. Student will be able to solve problems creatively. Assessment of Objectives Students will be asked questions verbally and in written form. A check for understanding will be done through discussion and observation. Final project will be evaluated using a rubric. Anticipatory Set Students will be shown examples of assemblage art by Beyte Saar. The students will be asked: Name the items you see in this piece. What could these items represent? What do you think this artwork is about? What was the artist trying to convey? The title of artwork will be provided for further discussion and understanding of the piece. Information A handout will be covered in class which will explain the project and its intention. A teachermade example will be shown and discussed. Students will be asked to begin brainstorming using the last page of the handout. Each student will decide upon three people, their interests/hobbies/personality traits and how

these can be represented. The final choice will be discussed with the teacher before beginning project. Thumbnail sketches will be created using the chosen individual. The sketches will show the inside and outside of the box, items to be included and where they will be placed and how items will be affixed. Each student will be provided a cigar box to paint/decoupage and fill. Students will be given the remainder of the time to complete project.

Closure A class critique will be held the day after the projects due date. Each student will explain his/her project and the purpose for the items that are included. The students will be given a short amount of time to constructively discuss each piece.
