TYPICAL ANALYSIS Carbon........ 2.15% Manganese..... Silicon....... .40% .40% Uses . . . Burnishing tools, Long-run blanking dies,
lamination dies, burnishing rolls, forming rolls, and wire drawing.

Forging . . . Preheat to 1200 to 1300 F (650 to 705 C).

Start forging at 1850 to 2000 F (1010 to 1095 C), and do not forge below 1700 F (925 C). Slow cool after forging.

Chromium......12.25% Vanadium...... .25%

RECOMMENDED HEAT TREATING PRACTICE Normalizing . . . Do not normalize. Annealing . . . Protect against decarburization. Heat

slowly and uniformly to 1600 to 1650 F (870 to 900 C). Use lower limit for small sections and upper limit for large sections. Holding time varies from 1-1/4 hr for light sections to 6 hr for heavy sections and large furnace charges. Cool slowly at a rate not to exceed 40 F (22 C) per hour until 1000 F (540 C) is reached after which cooling rate is not critical. Typical annealed hardness, 217 to 255 HB.

Stress Relieving . . . Optional. Heat to 1250 to 1300 F

(675 to 705 C) for 1 hr per inch of cross section (minimum of 1 hr). Air cool.

Hardening . . . Heat very slowly. Preheat at 1500 F (815

C) and austenitize at 1700 Hold at temperature 15 min for large tools. Quench quenched hardness, 64 to 66 to 1800 F (925 to 980 C). for small tools to 45 min in warm oil. Approximate HRC.

Tempering . . . Temper immediately at 400 to 1000 F (205

to 540 C) after tool has cooled to about 120 to 150 F (49 to 66 C). Double temper, allowing tool to cool to room temperature before second temper. Range of hardness after tempering, 61 to 54 HRC

The data presented herein are typical values, and do not warrant suitability for any specific application or use of this material. Normal variations in the chemical composition, the size of the product, and heat treatment parameter may result in different values for the various physical and mechanical properties.
