Generator Primary Water system during long shutdowns.

Sir,

Dt: 08-12-2011

It is understood that during shut downs either long/ short period, moisture formation inside the Generator is to be avoided. 1. PW system can be taken out of service for attending its problems or filters cleaning etc. during short periods. 2. In a prolonged shutdown period if PW system is out of service and H2 gas is removed, then there must be a moisture formation inside the Generator casing. 3. To avoid moisture formation Drier to be kept in service by opening suitable man holes to enter hot air and leave while covering entire generator ( special care must be taken as the man holes are kept open). Present condition of the KTPP Generator. 1. H2 gas removed from the Generator casing subsequently seal oil also taken out of service for inspection of the Generator Bearings, But the PW system in service. 2. As the H2 gas not available and hence driers also not in service , then the moisture formation possibilities still present. 3. PW system cooler manual valves was closed after declaration of the unit overhauls, and then due to PW circulation, the temperature of the PW maintaining around 43 degrees. 4. This warm condition may be sufficient to avoid the moisture formation inside the Generator due to non availability of H2 gas and its drier system. 5. Main requirement is to avoid moisture formation and foreign material entry chances inside the Generator up to the maximum extent possible, to avoid the problems while starting the unit. Hence we left the Generator system as above.
