Class Work Sheet Moving Charges and Magnetism 1. A circular coil of 400 turns has a radius 3.5 m and carries a current of 4A.What is the magnetic field at a point on the axis of the coil from the centre? Ans. The magnetic field at a point on the axis of the coil is given by

If a = x

Here I = 4A, n = 400, a = 3.5

2. What happens to the magnetic field of the coil on its axis at a point very very far away from its centre, if the radius of the coil is doubled keeping the current flowing through it unchanged? Ans. The magnetic field at a point on the axis of the coil is given by

If the point lies very very far away , then x>>a Therefore, ..eq.1 From Eq.1 if we double the radius (a) of the coil, the field becomes four times. 3. Six parallel aluminum wires of small, but finite, radius lie in the same plane. The wires are separated by equal distances d, and they carry equal currents I in the same direction. Find the magnetic field at the center of the first wire. Assume that the current in each wire is uniformly distributed over its cross section. Ans.

A schematic layout of the problem is shown in the following figure:

The

magnetic

field

generated by a single wire is, where r is the distance from the center of the

wire. This equation is correct for all points outside the wire, and can therefore be used to determine the magnetic field generated by wire 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The field at the center of wire 1, due to the current flowing in wire 1, can be determined using Ampere's law, and is equal to zero. The total magnetic field at the center of wire 1 can be found by vector addition of the contributions of each of the six wires. Since the direction of each of these contributions is the same, the total magnetic field at the center of wire 1 is equal to B = B2+ B3 + B4+ B5 + B6 = (1/d+1/2d+1/3d+1/4d+1/5d)

4. An electron is moving with a velocity v, along the axis of a long straight solenoid, carrying a current. What will be the force acting on the electron due to the magnetic field of the solenoid ? Ans.

5. The velocities of two - paricles A and B entering a uniform electric field are in the ratio 4:1. On entering the field they move in different circular paths. Give the ratio of the radii of curvature of the paths of the particles. Ans.

6. Two conductors placed at a distance of 12 cm are parallel to each other and attract with a force of 10 N. If the current in one conductor is 5 A, find the current in other conductor. Ans.

7. An electron of energy 200 eV describes circle in a magnetic field of 0.2T. Calculate the radius of the circle. Given mass of electron is 9 x 10-31 kg, 1eV=1.6 x 10-19J. Ans. Given E= 200eV= 200 x 1.6 x 10-19 J B= 0.2T q= 1.6 x 10-19C m= 9 x 10-31 kg As -------------------------------------------(1) Also -------------------------------------------(2) Put the value of v from eq(1) in eq(2) = Therefore, r= =2.37 x 10-4 m.

8. An electron is moving in a magnetic field of (2 + 5) tesla with a velocity of 3 x 104 m/s. what will be the magnetic force acting on the particle. Ans. = (2 + 5?) T, q= 1.6 x 10-19 C = q( x )
-19

= 3 x 104 m/s

= 1.6 x 10 [(3 x 104 ) x (2 + 5?)] = 1.6 x 10-19[6 x 104k] = 9.6 x 10-15k or F= 9.6 x 10-15 N along positive Z- direction.
