3rd Grade Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Can you believe it is January already,
and half the school year has come and
gone! We look forward to the second part
of the year being as productive and
fulfilling as the first half.
In a few days, your child will be taking the
State ELA exam. Once that is over, we will
be focusing our attention on getting ready
for the state math exam. We ask that you
practice number facts, particularly
multiplication facts, with your child each
night.

Social Studies/Science
In Social Studies, the children will be
“traveling” to China to compare life in
China to life here in America.
The children will be doing research on
line, as well as from books, about the
differences in language, schools, and
culture between our two countries
In Science, the children will complete
their study of energy, and move on to
study electricity. The science curriculum
is challenging, but quite interesting.

Reader’s Workshop
In the reader’s workshop, we continue to
work on developing and improving the
reading skills and strategies of all the
children. In the upcoming weeks, we will be
working on the skill of identifying the cause
and its effect in a given situation. We will
also be working on identifying and forming
conclusions.
Writer’s Workshop
During the month of January, we will be
working on writing a response to literature.
The children will be asked to write a letter
to a character in a story that we have all
read. They will practice all of the skills they
have learned so far this year, and will
produce a final product ready to be
published. As always, your child is
responsible to edit and revise their own
work.
Everyday Math
This month we will begin the unit on the
meaning of multiplication and division. Your
child will be required to learn all the
multiplication tables as they are introduced in
class. It is very important that everyone
studies their number facts daily.
